You've told us about the "one that got away", about what makes
a great collector, and how you feel about the grading companies.

Now tell us about your "hobby resolution" for the New Year and
please share with us the two or three cards that you would most
like to add to your collection in 2007

New Year's Resolution- to work closely with the Negro League
Museum in building its collection and enhancing its acquisition fund

Three Most Wanted in 2007

1. 1915 Cracker Jack Advertising Display sign
2. E 93 HOF in PSA 8
3. Red Stocking Cigar Type Card

Best wishes for a Happy New Year!!

We thought this thread was going to involve a resolution regarding people referring to themselves in the first person singular for 2007, but we were sadly mistaken.

I would like to add to or complete my PC 800, d359 and d304 sets. Also looking to add to my Cobb leaning-on-his-bat collection (just added a thread in the B/S/T). Good luck to all in '07.

My BB collecting resolution is to change my focus from collecting type cards to HOF cards. So be on the lookout for a mass selling of type cards...soon!

1) To complete my T206 Cubs team set (this is somewhat lofty, although theoretically achievable)
2) To begin narrowing the collection through Ebay sales
3) To complete my Walter Payton PSA player registry set (Hey, everything can't be vintage!)...only missing the 1984 Topps in high grade.

I have never commented on Bruce using "us" or "we" instead of "I" and I have even corrosponded in email with him a couple of times, and he doesnt refer to himself in this matter. I do understand speaking of yourself in plural form when buying collectables for a group. But in the sense it was used in this post unless more then one person uses your account it makes no sense.
As far as my collecting goal for 2007, it's to expand on my type card collection. I would like to have atleast one example from each set of the various colored D,E,N,T issues that are roughly T206 sized and present nicely.

Trae, thanks for the link to the Paytons, although, fortunately, I cannot get on Ebay at work due to firewall blocks, etc...I'll take a peek when I get home...I say fortunately, because if I could get on Ebay at work, I think I would go broke rather quickly!
also, I may let those go because the trick to resolutions is (at least from what I have found), is to make one or two rather easy...there;s nothing like the feeling of progress to keep you going

Andy,
very cool...look for an email, while my Payton collection is still rather remedial, and focusing upon his Basic set, I am interested to learn more about what you collect as well, because the time will soon come to expand my horizons for this sub-collection

Cheers!
Jason L

Guys,

My New Year's resolution is to be patient in collecting my 1933 Goudey set. Since I only have the Ott in a batting pose, I will have to be very patient. Laugh out loud.

To complete the Delong, tattoo Orbit and M116 sets is my resolution, all are doable as I am down to a couple of cards in each set although the Sporting Life duo I need are pricey.
Everyone have a safe and happy New Year's.

My resolution is to stay focused.

My goals I guess would be to continue working on the Scrapps set, and locate a copy of Guy Green's "The Nebraska Indians: a Complete History" book.

My resolution is to make one great find in 2007. Perhaps a little old lady who is about to lose her home will finally put up for sale her grandfather's collection of 2000 vintage baseball cards- an original collection loaded with tobacco cards, including a Wagner and Plank, several hundred caramel cards including a rich sampling of E107, and hundreds of 19th century cards including Yum Yums, G & B's, S.F. Hess, and many exotic N172 and Gypsy Queens. And I of course will offer her full retail for each and every card, so she will be able to save her home from foreclosure. Happy and healthy New Year to all !!

This is actually a neat thread - it made me think a little bit and focus. I need to stop the see-it-buy-it approach, picking up this and that just because I can think of a reason I like it or maybe could use it. So after some thought my two NYR's for 2007 are:

1) Card related: Try to pick up one team image of the Detroit Tigers from around 1907 to 1910 or so. Maybe HM Taylor, T200, probably prefer the M101-2. If possible, try to pick up a low end T227 Cobb. Both or either of these will require that I settle down and forego some spontaneous smaller and middle buys and be more patient with both money and time.

2) Non-card related: Do at least one or two investigative/preparatory things to try to visit Cuba in 2008. Who knows - maybe even 07? I've always wanted to go, and now I've decided to start looking into it and doing whatever it is I have to do for arrangements. The US may ease the embargo if Castro passes, and to be perfectly blunt I'd like to get there and see it before Starbucks, Pottery Barn, Ben and Jerry's and the rest set up shop.

Not to say that's my ONLY non-card related NYR. But the others are pretty cliche and pedictable, and seem to be the same ones I had last year.

Good thread.

Joann

Hi Joann

With respect to your post on Cuba, if I can give an unsolicited plug for my friend Kit Krieger and his baseball tours of Cuba http://www.cubaballtours.com/

Kit was a major collector of baseball cards in the 1970s and was one of the first people I know who sold his collection and bought a house with the proceeds. Kit was also a clubhouse boy for the Vancouver Mounties in the 1960s and convinced his manager to let him start the last game of the 1968 PCL season. Really.

I'd like to overcome the addictive nature of the hobby; that is, convincing myself that I need a card that I never previously wanted in order to experience the adrenalin rush of an eBay auction and then the anticipation of receiving the card in the mail. Mark

After reviewing my holiday bills, I would like to revise my 2007 goals and resolutions!

NO new purchases until June.
Only expenses until June will be for supplies and grading submissions.

Then,
collection trimming/narrowing through sales
T206 Cubs
T205 Cubs
T200 Cubs
Start a 1930s Cubs set (any suggestions?)

Slightly less on topic, I also need to work on:
Finish the Walter Payton Player PSA registry set, continue on the Eddie Mathews, Ernie Banks and Stan Musial sets as well

of course, that is NOT what I meant...but I will leave it in because it's funny...at least I didn't say "chemically peeling and corner rebuilding" !!!
ugh...trying to do too many things on the PC today...

Furthermore, and I would like to assure everyone here that I haven't the faintest idea how to tamper with any card, I don't know anyone who can, and my cards are not worth the effort, even collectively. I'm just a moron who loves baseball and its associated collectables...honest. I can show you my SATs if you don't believe me.

Jason, I know you had no intention of trimming or altering your collection. It just was a funny phrase. It reminded me of a sketch Johnny Carson used to do with Ed McMahon- Aunt Blabbie. Carson's character was a really old woman and McMahon would always say to her "that's quite an undertaking" to which she would reply: "never use the word 'undertaking' around an old person." It's a variation of that theme- saying something innocent that's loaded with other implications.

Finish my '33 and '34 Goudey hall of famer sets (minus Lajoie), and maybe even the T3 hall of famers. Most desired card though, would be a T227 Cobb

I suspect it's "just" a matter of willpower. I'll see how much I've got.

Forgot to mention 2007 wish list. It would be nice to pick up an N43 of runner Myers and an affordable Ogden's Houdini. The other vintage cards on my wish list are nearing "pipe dream" status. And, I wouldn't mind an autograph card of Lefty Driesell (way OT), probably the most prominent alumnus of my high school. Mark

by the difficulty of locating what I collect. But here goes anyhow:

I'd like to finish at least one Exhibit boxing set and one Exhibit baseball set.

I'd like to find at least one more obscure Lefty O'Doul card for my collection.

I am resolved to weed out, pare down and otherwise focus my postwar collection, because in looking at it last night I realized it is an unfocused hodge-podge of cards I've accumulated over 20+ years. Nice cards, but lots of stuff I don't really care to collect any more.

If I had a wish list, the 1918 Zeenut Lefty O'Doul would top it.

Steve,

So your going after '33 and '34 Goudey Hall of Famers, sounds good to me. Is there a dealer or auction site that is especially good for purchasing these items. I just started a '33 Goudey set and trying to locate sellers. Thanks. And Happy New Year to Joann and the Guys.

I do want to focus my collection a bit. That likely will include selling some cards off, but like I have stated before I have a hard time pulling the trigger on selling cards.

I would like to add a "defining" card to my collection....although I don't know what this may be (Cobb w/Cobb perhaps). A N167 HOFer isn't exactly a "collection defining card" but it would do. Cards I may look for include: e90-1 Jax, E Delehanty (not sure which one), Drum Back HOFer. I really am looking forward to REA. There are always some defining cards in Rob's auction.

Lastly, I want to spend less time doing "this." Less time on EBay (I have already cut that a bunch). Less time scouring auctions. Less time on the Board. I really need to maximize my earning potential in the next few years and "this" has been a material focus for me in the last few years so I want to cut back. But, that being said, I do want to go to the National.

Peter, I haven't found one specific dealer that I go to above others; rather, I just pick up the cards from ebay. I pretty much limit myself to PSA 3-4 cards.

is to find as many vintage albums with cards and soak them out......oops, saw Jim was right above me. Just messin' with ya.....

Hmm........
PERSONALLY
LOTS to deal with for 2007......
Getting a baby from China in 1st Quarter I pray and resolving (like Leon) to get rid of my business encumberance.....

CARDS/MEMORABILIA
As for cards, pick up 20-30 more Colgan's I need....an increasingly tough exercise.

Finish up about 10 of the 25+ Allen & Ginter non-sports sets I have started.

Consolidate all the CRAP I buy into some core items.

Well my major goal for the year has already been attained - I picked up a copy of the Nebraska Indians first book - one that I was considering maybe didn't exist. Unbelievably one popped up on ebay the very hour Max Weder and I were discussing the book in email.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

It's not in hand yet, but I should have it this week (cross fingers).
