Austin is one of the most attractive areas I have ever visited, lucky you. I too will bite the bullet and sign up soon, but I have lots of hesitancy.

This hesitency is because I fear that when you allow someone else to do your research you may lose out on many of the side paths which are encountered in a research effort. I have frequently found these side paths more rewarding that the initially envisioned objective.

Admittedly though, I am not even certain that this concern is applicable. Well then there is the wonder whether the publications and other services are really worth the fee. It is obvious that those members who responded in the other SABR thread were totally enthusiastic about the research group, but it is also apparent that a small percentage of the board indicated being members.

Fortunately for me to find out for myself if that group is right for me will not involve a second mortgage on the house. And if they actually publish anything at all it is sure to be more worthwhile that the VCBC subscription which I started in June '04 (and haven't seen even one issue yet).

Good luck.

Gilbert, thanks for the reply. I joined mostly from the recommendation of old friend, & the usually positive posts I see on this board. I'm not to concerned about what the experience may be good or bad, just gonna roll with it. Also, I would like to say I thought I knew alot about vintage cards, atleast until I started reading this board. Y'all are awesome.

A good thing to do is locate you nearest regional chapter and try to make it to meetings. They always a good time and there is usually some interesting baseball related activity involved too.

When I joined back in the mid 80s, I thought I knew more about baseball and it's history than jsut about anyone. After joining SABR, I realized that was a mere neophyte. And I can bury just about anyone in Trivial Pursuit Sports edition but found out how little I really know after trying to answer the question at the Lefty O'Doul chapter meetings. If I got 15-25% of them right I felt I did good and there were guys getting most, if not all of them right.

gilbert, I wouldn't worry about not being able to travel those side paths. People are more than willing to help, but no one is going to tell you that you have to travel a certain direction with your research.

Jay, I plan on going to the regional meetings. Living near Austin, & not to far from San Antonio & Houston, there should be a few meetings from time to time. Yes, I'll probably be humbled some too, just like when I started reading this board. Thanks.

Jay if i joined sabr could they tell me why the Pirates in 1909 aquired Kid Durbin from the Reds in exchange for Ward Miller and cash, and then used him in just one game as pinch runner a month later.Seems like a very odd trade,to give them a player and cash for a guy who was 1-5 on the season in 6 games and batted .250 in 14 games the previous season, and then they only use him once a month later.

If you can get a good answer for that question ill join today

John I have no idea, but I am sure there are other fantaical Pirates fans like you that have probably looked into the question. I'll put it up on the SABR-l list and see if it gets a response.

Is SABR a good source for minor league stats? Is there a better one?

SABR has a committee doveote soley to minor leagues. There pretty much isn't any part of the game that isn't covered by a committee. I guess there isn't a player's wives committee yet, lol.
