Default April Pickups

'Cause it's midnight somewhere.

This card was a whale for me, in that I searched longer for one of these bad boys than any other card. Deep thanks to a couple board members for helping track this down. When guys who can pretty much locate any card out there have trouble turning up a card, you know it's tough.

Default Cy

Sweet Joe Jax Matt.

This one's been on my want list for a while (IMO the best looking Cy).. and I went after this one on Goodwin. Tried to wait up for it, but that auction went loooooong. Happy to see I had it in AM, and for an increment less than my max bid.

Thanks Derek. I was as a bit shocked as well as this is my 7th or 8th one that I have picked up and chalked it as being a reprint too since all the others had come back that way. I even told the seller that I was pretty sure it was coming back to him as a reprint but he was a great guy and had no problem with that but had maintained (as did they all) it was original. So I'll chalk it up as a blind squirrel gets a nut once in a while.

Congrats Rhett, the Bernard was an absolute steal. I hadn't ever seen a Schwenck before, it must be very scarce. I was busy bidding against you but gave up since I don't collect the 1912s except Portland players. Great pick-up!

Just a quick story on Bierbauer and the Pirates name, don't want to get the April pick-up thread off topic, so I'll leave it at this.

After signing Bierbauer and others, the Philadelphia owners did say they "pirated" players from other teams and a few out of town papers called them Pirates in 1891(Boston, Chicago and Cincinnati), but the local paper still referred to them either as the Alleghenys at the beginning of that season or as the Hanlons after manager Ned Hanlon. When Bill McGunnigle took over later in the season, he used a whistle during practices and the team then became known as the Pets. A name that was used quite often. Pirates was never used by the local papers.

The Pirates nickname didn't catch on until later and it may have more to do with the owner of the club at the time, William Kerr, who was called Captain Kerr and had a pet parrot in his office, that was an ill-mannered bird and quite famous.
