Default 1953 Bowman Color and Black & White -- Card Gallery

The 1953 Topps thread is done, so we're moving on to the 1953 Bowman Color set. Same idea as before, post a card a day from the 1953 Bowman Color set in numerical order.

Davey Williams starts it off.

Hopefully Al chimes in that this is the rare blue-line Williams.

While I really like the 53 Bowman set it is kind of boring in terms of variations. I don’t think PSA or SCD list any. There is one in the B&W set. I think I may have some variants for it. Will have to check

I am sill upset with you about jacking up the price on the 52 Sleater

Jay, thanks for starting this new thread! And I see your 53B cards are as huge as your 53T's.

I like the 53B set for the photo quality, it is just a classy set. Like most of my collection, I have several scattered cards but am not close to completing the set. Still I enjoy showing what I have. Here are my first two:

Al,

I wish I knew how to reduce the size of the pictures I post. I do the same thing I always did which is take a picture on my phone then transfer it to my computer to crop and then post. After some change was made on the site related to attachments, they started showing up bigger than before. If anyone can tell me how to get them to display smaller, I would appreciate it.

The size that appears here is determined by the size of the file you upload. You can see the size on the screen that you use to browse your computer and then upload it here. For the best size to view, I suggest somewhere around 200 - 400 kb. If you are cropping the image on some kind of photo editing software, you should be able to quickly and easily resize your image down to an acceptable number of kb. Look for an editing option in the menu bar that says "Resize" and allows you to downsize the number of kb or mb in the image. Hope this helps.

Steve, my files were already 200-400kb, but I found an option to save them even smaller which looks like it helped. Thanks.

Feel free to start a 54 Topps thread as well, or we can do one in about 5 months when this one ends.

Phil, nice looking cards. We're trying to keep this thread to one card a day in numerical order so please don't get ahead of that when you post your cards.

Here's my Sid Gordon for today.

I have a lot of scanning to do, but at the same time, I hope that other collectors of this set share what they have. This way we can see a variety of the cards that have been assembled. I still feel that the 53 Bowman set "flies under the radar." There have been discussions that it lacks certain star and HOF cards. Also, it's quirky in terms of the centering, blurred images, and its tendency to have print debris on quite a number of the cards. However, its elegant simplicity due to the Kodachrome images has seldom been duplicated.

Just found this thread, and will follow it with interest daily. Indeed it is great to see Phil posting, as he is a big part of how I finished my set. I love this set, front and back, start to finish.

Thank you Jim, I'll post many cards, but I also want to see a variety of other collectors submitting their 53 Bowmans as well. I hope you'll also share with us.

As you'll notice it's off-center. When I first started assembling this set, I didn't care about centering as long as it wasn't miscut. While I still have a preference for sharp corners, I try to upgrade with cards that are around 70/30. The bigger cards, Mantle and Berra will have to remain off-center.

These threads are awesome. Thank all of you who post card pics in them. I still have the first 50s card I ever bought 35+ years ago. Near the end of the month I will be able to post it in this thread.

I posted some packs and panel stuff in the 52 and 53 Topps threads at the end, but not sure if there are any official rules. A panel involves 3 players, who is first up on it ?

First one on the sheet is #33 Pee Wee, first one on the panel is #66 Parnell. Bowman makes them easy, all in sequential order.

Harry Chiti
I have this set, but never studied it by name since the names are on the back of the card only. I am not sure how this player pronounces his last name. But, a few weeks ago, my wife and I had a dinner at a new place and it wasn't particularly good. While we were eating, she asked me how I liked my name. I said "It rhymes with Harry Chiti" (If Chiti is pronounced like it rymes with how my food tasted..)

Apologies to jump in late and break up the sequential order with a comment on a card earlier in the run, but I got a kick out of seeing that name.

I'll keep an eye going forward and if it needs some additional cards, I go get it out of the safe and start posting. I know that I have a handful of granded cards - mostly in the 4-6 range but I do have a PSA 8 Rizzuto. My mantle is a 5.5. Really awesome thread. It will give me an excuse to look at the cards and go through the 54 as well!
