The show was great. I arrived at around 4:30 and busy scanning every table and done the whole floor at around 8:30. There were a lot more vintage materials than last year. Mastro displayed the whole Frank Nagy collection and it was unbelievable especially the condition of them. They will be available in their Dec auction. I guess it is time to save up $$$ now. However, IMO, his T206 Wagner was obviously overgraded...four rounded corners and graded GAI 3.5??? |

Are the Nagy cards authenticated? By which company? If PSA, will it be designated 'The Nagy Collection'? Just curious. Wish I was there as well. |

I could be wrong but I don't recall any T208 from Nagy's collection. Enjoy the pics. None of them have been graded yet but the T206 Wagner. Since they haven't been graded, Mastro has a sign saying Nagy's collection will not be removed for viewing. |

I can't even imagine the thrill of being able to see all those great cards in one place. Looking at a Halper, etc. catalog is great, but actually being able to eyeball it all together? All those CJ's with Honus on top- sorta reminds me of those 'grab bag' Santa packs someone repackaged of late 50s Topps - what's underneath the top card!? Just those couple of photos made me want to move the camera around and see more! |

I am pretty sure Mastro would grade Nagy's cards before they add them in their Dec auction. Mastro just got Nagy's collection recently and I guess they don't have time submitting them to PSA or GAI yet. |

In the Nagy Collection, they have a 1933 Goudey Owen Carroll card with a completely white background. That card should have a light blue background. Any more info about this error/freakness would be appreciated. |

the show is pretty good. nice selection of vintage material. i was there wednesday from 4-9 and today for a couple more hours. i picked up some neat football cabinets that i should post while leon is away . tik has nice stuff, as always. i didn't see the nagy collection, but i will tomorrow. sgc's display is unreal, too many high grade cracker jacks to list.....highlighted by an sgc 98 joe jax. and, my favorite the sgc 96 national chicle bronko nagurski. the crowds were pretty good size for a thursday afternoon. the weekend may be nuts. leon and scott's table is very cool. thanks again for the mello mint, leon! |

Just and i mean just got home from the show. Was there the last 3 days. Pre- war is on fire. Talked to one dealer 2 hours into the show. He had pre-war up into the 70s. 23,000 dollars in sales all pre-war. Another dealer, old judge kelly 9 sold, old judge delehanty 7.5 sold. I noticed that high grade or rare no matter what grade is hot. The Nagy collection is nice, very nice! Crowds were ok but i think the weekend will be better. For me the best part is meeting so many great people. |

Scott and Leon had a nice variety of cards available. There was a Dave's Vintage Cards from CA that had a ton of OJs, both raw and graded. I thought the Thursday crowd was kind of light, but all the dealers I asked said that the show was going pretty well. |

I attended on Thursday and found a relatively decent selection of E cards. Scott B and Gary N had a good amount and I was able to get a few cards from each. A saw a few 94s, but the prices are getting obscene. 90-2's and 3's were scarce but I was able to get a 90-3 Schulte from Scott. Gary had lots of 95s and 97s that I wanted but my money was gone after buying Ruth and Gehrig 33 goudey cards. Gary, if you have any of the 97s left, let me know. |

Gary N is Gary Nuchereno who had a table named Premiere sportcards (or something like that). A real nice guy who had some of the best looking high grade 97s and other caramels that I have ever seen. I dont believe the high grade cards were for sale-but I probably could not have afforded them even if they were. |

An interesting show. It was way better organized and in a much better facility than Cleveland. Anything pre WWI is on fire. Prices were much higher than last year and dealers were not moving on them much. Inventory seemed lower than last year. Those who did negotiate, or who had inventory that was not repriced recently, had their stuff gobbled up by dealers before the show even opened. The show was picked clean on set-up day except for full retail sellers and sellers with stuff that was just hard to go through. I heard lots of "you just missed it; another dealer bought it" stories and I was there on friggin' Wednesday evening! Most of the good prewar deals I got were from soruces that either hadn't updated large inventory prices or who had stuff buried in unappealing piles. I came home with a lot of cards, but nothing earth-shattering. It was more of a fill in the holes show. I did find some really great boxing stuff this year (unlike last year) but that's O/T. Some picks: |

Since my other post dealt more with personalities, this will be strictly cards. The one common complaint was that there were way too many buyers and not enough cards. I bought a nice graded M116 Vic Willis from Tom Witek and a tough, tough graded M116 Rebel Oakes from him which wasn't at the show. Tom's prices were reasonable. I picked up a PSA 2 Honus Wagner blue background from Scott B. which looked much better than a 2, nice eye appeal. That was it for Sporting Life cards. Scott was the only dealer who had more than a handful and most had none. Sporting Lifes, alas, are starting to dry up just like everything else. Caramels were almost non-existent. I bought an SGC 60 Evers and 60 Wiltse from the E95 set and a handful of E97s in 20s and 30s for decent prices from Gary N. The E98s were simply not there. A few, mostly trimmed or overpriced. E94s? Fuggetaboutit! 4 cards in the whole frigging hall. A trimmed red Evers, an SGC 40 Turner which sold for $475, a high grade red Wagner which I didn't see and an authentic trimmed olive Lord which will be in an auction. That's it. You can say all you want about the scarcity of the other caramel card sets but the E94s have dried up. Period. Good luck bidding on Nagy's. I talked to Doug Allen and the E94s will be graded. Cobb (gold) will probably be an 84 or better. The rest of the group of 23 may be sold in one lot. (Horrors!) The Wagner and Young may be sold separately if they grade high enough but look for most in one lot. That will kill the average collector. We can only look for someone to buy it, break it up and sell them individually on ebay, card by card. |

I just got back in from the airport and it was a hell of a nice time. Meeting and talking at the dinner was very cool...i've never held an e107 wagner and matty(andy baron's). In general I think all the prices were pretty high except for the fair amount of 50's and 60's we picked up in solid vg-ex. All in all good show and great to see and meet everyone. No scans yet but here's a list at the damage. Alson thanks again to all who I bought from. Lots of thanks to leon and scott b. also to ryan c. for sitting down and talking cuban and negro league cards with us and starting us off with a Martin Dihigo. |

You ever notice that there are some dealers who do not seem to sell anything? In Cleveland I found a dealer with some exhibit cards I wanted but his prices were outlandish and he had no interest in negotiating so I skipped his table. He was there again in CHI with the same cards, same prices and same no-sales. |

Biggest news from my perspective is got offered a job to write a regular column. The only thing I bought was a retro 70s cap of the Giants for my son that he liked, and that was it. I spent most of my time stopping and talking to dealers and collectors I had not seen in 15 years or more. I saw a lot of cards I would like to have bought, but this was more a trip about meeting people than buying cards for me. |

You pretty much got it. Each night I, and several others, went back to the Sofitel (a nice hotel across the street from the National and across the street from where Scott B. and I were staying) and had a few cold ones. I think it was a big mistake for any auction house not to be there. There will be an exciting consignment in Mastro's Dec. auction because they made the trip...and were as hospitable as ever. Bill Mastro wanted one of my cards for consigment and made a little concession but I wasn't interested. With things that transpired, and all things considered, they got a cherry in the end......regards |
