Never saw that pennant before - nice! Who did the road jersey belong to?

Me too.... Never seen another!

Although this same Batter image was used on the 1940 World Series Pennant (Reds/Tigers). Glad to know this Batter is a Reds' logo, and will post a pic of the WS Pennant when time allows. Just wish I could enlist Chris for his classy photo skills!

Love the pennants. I love flat items! I can hide them away from the prying eyes of my wife a little bit easier. I have seen Louisville Slugger pens floating around, and I thought those would be an interesting addition! I also like the fan flair!

Default Bucky Walters Letter

I picked up a Bucky Walters letter on eBay maybe two years ago. When I got it, I figured out that Larry is the author Lawrence Ritter, who wrote "The Glory of Their Times." I was quite please to see commentary about something personal and of importance hobbyists within the context.

Beautiful Letter! What a different era, when people actually took great pride in their penmanship. I always loved Bucky Walters' signature.

As promised, here is the 1940 WS Pennant, with the same Batter image as Chris G's two great Reds Pennants...

I've said that more than a few times myself, haha...

Thanks for NOT doing that, Chris. It was actually my 6th or 7th crack at getting this version. There's actually a yellow variation of this pennant that I think looks a bit better. The Red and the Yellow versions seem equally rare...

But logic would dictate that the yellow was sold at Briggs Stadium and the Red was sold at Crosley Field. So guess I was fortunate, despite the long wait!

Default 1939 All-Star

Found this the other day. I love seeing the Reds players next to other big name stars. The 1939 WS and 1940 WS put them next to elite level players: Joe Dimaggio and Hank Greenberg. This photo is the 1939 All Star game.

Very nice Tim!

That's an impressive display... both in terms of content and size. Must be a giant shadowbox to hold all of that.

Great stuff!

Hi Mark,

I don’t have a link or don’t know how to get it on here. I saw it on a forum, Player Collector Showcase, which I have been on, but keep getting all sorts of ads popping up when I was there. Anyway, a member there, I think it’s JBrules, picked up the ‘75 Topps JB proofs and said it was purchased from a member on Net54 and hoping I can find out the buyer and/or seller.

Very excited, I just purchased my first game used memorabilia. Eugenio Suarez hat, from the September 8 ball game featuring jerseys from 1995. Hit two home runs that day, 43 & 44. Wanted to buy one all season, finally dove in and picked one up after he set the Venezuelan HR record and NL third baseman record. Very excited.

Thanks. I wanted to pick up some other items from their various throwback uni's but just couldn't pull the trigger. Those blue uniforms they had early in the season were my favorite.

Default Ewell Blackwell's personal trophy ball from his 16th consecutive win in 1947

This is Ewell Blackwell's personal game used trophy ball from his 16th consecutive win in 1947, which was 2nd only to HOF Rube Marquard's ML standard of 19 consecutive wins in 1912 .
The game ball is also vintage signed by "The Whip".

1947 was a historic season for Ewell Blackwell.
After hurling a no-hitter on June 18th, 1947, Blackwell almost tied Johnny Vander Meer's ML record of pitching back-to-back no-hitters.
He went 8 2/3 innings before finally giving up a hit.
After 72 years nobody has ever gotten closer to Vandy's double no-hit record...

The Blackwell ball is a great pickup. Few would know it today, but he was probably the best pitcher on earth when that ball was signed (sorry Bob Feller and Warren Spahn!). Too bad it lasted for just one season.

Great addition. Beautiful ball and vibrant signature. I have a Wheaties ad (full color, oversize page) and signed 3x5 that I had framed back at home of Blackwell. I will have to take a picture and share it.

Question for the Reds folks...

Does anyone happen to have any memorabilia from the 1981 Hall of Fame Game (Reds vs. A's) which was cancelled due to the strike?

Default Reds from different eras

Here's a few Reds-related pieces from my collection that are on the CooperstownExpert.com website. To look at all of the people associated with the Reds who are on the site, click here.

In each of the descriptions, the player's name is highlighted so you can click through to their page if you want to see more.

The first piece is an advance scouting report on Paul O'Neill. The report is from just 54 games into his big league career. O'Neill seemed amused and almost agitated when he signed it. Notice the inscription.

The next image shows a letter on Reds letterhead from February 17, 1943. It's written to Bucky Walters about his contract for the upcoming year and from Hall of Fame executive Warren Giles. Neat to see some behind-the-scenes work there.

The third letter written by GM Bob Howsm on Reds letterhead congratulating Warren Spahn on his induction into the Hall. The Spahn page has some neat stuff on it. The final image shows Johnny Bench agreeing to be on the Babe Ruth Foundation Advisory Board. The letter is actually in response to Brooks Robinson.

Scott,

Just curious what's your most prized Vander Meer piece, and what is your yet to be obtained dream piece of his?

Default Most prized Vandy piece

Paul,
That is a tough choice, to be honest.
That being said, I have a few pieces that are favorites.
They are:

Graig Kreindler Vandy original painting

Vandy's personal copies of both of his 1938 contracts from the year he pitched his back-to-back no-hitters. I successfully reunited these guys from two different sources after many years

Lois (Stewart) Vander Meer's (wife of Vandy) personal scrapbook from 1937-1943 that includes her ticket from Vandy's historic 2nd consecutive no-hitter

1939 Goldsmith Vander Meer endorsed mitt & box featuring Vandy artwork

The 1938 signed baseball that I showed a couple of posts ago in this thread

The circa 1938 Vandy pennant that I own (Many thanks to net54's Chris Gamble for allowing me to add the last two items to my collection)

1938 NY Sunday News color Vandy poster that I framed with an original celebration snapshot from Vandy's 2nd consecutive no-hitter (1st night game @ Brooklyn Dodgers)

Vandy items that I would love to be able to add to my collection at this point:

Anything Vandy game used from the Reds (Holy Grail: Vandy rookie jersey)

Vandy double no-hitter pennant from 1938 (it exists, but I don't own one)

A scored program from Vandy's 1st no-hitter on 6/11/38 @ Cinci

A ticket with a printed date from Vandy's 1st no-hitter

Both of Vandy's personal last out balls from Vandy's back-to-back no-hitters
Probably untouchable now that Rush's Geddy Lee now owns them, BTW.

Tim,
That's a great looking Ewell Blackwell Wheaties ad and it looks terrific the way that you framed it.
Thanks for sharing it with us!

Scott,
The Graig Kreindler Vandy original painting is probably my favorite that he's done. Love everything about it.
BTW, I think your assessment is correct about the last out balls. I think the only way to get those out of Geddy's hands is to hope he goes bankrupt (not likely) or that you have something to trade that he really needs.

Agree about the Kreindler…

Might be my favorite of any of his masterpieces. The Vandy is truly brilliant. He did a Jackie Robinson Painting that (for me) is right up there as well. Those are my two favorites. Oh, and the big Red Machine starting line-up panorama is right up there as well. And I almost forgot the incredible Matty from the Conlon image. And what about the amazing Honus Wagner with the stadium backdrop? That's one is just as spectacular...

Ok, so it's impossible to pick just one. But the Vander Meer is just as great as any of them. Great stuff, Scott!

Super excited to share this: 23 players, 25 cards of the 1938-39 Cincinnati Reds W-711 team issued set (2 cards are the variation year W-711-2). A large lot came up on eBay that I purchased, and it added about 10 cards to my collection including McKechnie and Vander Meer. I've been looking for the McKechnie for 2+ years.

Ps: I'm selling the duplicates on BST.

Tim,

Good morning. I collect the W711-1 as well. Dumb question: What's BST?
