Default T206 Mathewson Questions

Posted By: David

This post concerns the T206 Christy Mathewson Pitching Variations: White Cap versus Dark Cap (I beleive the Dark Cap also has the addition team name overprinted on his jersey too Correct me if I'm wrong). My questions are as follows:

1) Assuming they were printed at different times, which one was printed after the other? Was there any overlap in their existance, or did one automatically replace the other?

2) Which one is rarer.

2) Other than the above mentioned graphics differences, are there any other obvious differences in the cards front, including the name plate at the bottom? I haven't owned either in a long time, but recall that they hadh different appearances, with one having pastel colors compared to the other.

Thanks in advance

white cap variation is harder to find. I personally prefer the look of the black cap variation.

The white cap is rarer. It was also earlier as it was first issued in the 150 series whereas the dark cap was first issued in the 350 series. All cards first issued in the 350 series are the most plentiful. I guess one could surmise that the initial issue (150) was so popular they produced the 350 in much more significant quantity especially the new players, poses introduced.

I don't see the dark cap as a replacement, many of the series overlaped.

Thanks to both for the input. Concerning Brueso's aesthetic comments, it must be something in my water, but I tend to see the 'other' card the more attractive. I always like the white cap better People tend to like better Cobb Port Red Background, while have long found the Green Back superior (more vivid to me). Luckily, I like Doby Gillis and Zamfir just like everyone else, or I'd have to doubt my sanity.

Uh-oh, no one else has chimed in to say they watch Doby Gillis. Perhaps it's time checked myself back in.

...about my preference on the Matty dark cap/white cap T206. To me, in the white cap card, it almost looks like Matty has highlighted his hair. His surfer phase, I guess.

Now, on the other hand, I prefer the dark cap Hal Chase to the white cap...

within the last year, I have seen several ads for the T206 Matty featuring both light and dark cap in the same grade, and the dark cap was the more expensive.
JUST FOUND OUT WHY: The SCD Standard Guide to Baseball cards, 2002, lists the dark cap Matty for $50 more! I remember when I first saw it, thinking, "The more things change, the more they stay the same" (you're suoppsed to think that in French, but I'm not grammatically proficient enough).

I have had OVER 400 Matty cards and I am certain the white cap variation is a 4:1 and in high grade ( ex-mt plus ) it's a 8:1 to locate.
