I just finished my 1960 Topps set. This is my second completion in less than a month, but I don't expect to finish any other sets this year.

Here is my last card:

I am not a set collector, but I am working on the 1951 Topps Blue Back set. I got a bunch of cards from someone whose husband died, and it seemed like he was trying to put together the set. I felt obligated to finish this journey for someone I never met.

Today the following from eBay to add to my 1951 Topps Blue Back set. These are getting harder to find and more expensive. They are not perfect and most have surface wrinkles and a few have creases, but the color is good and no paper loss. Four of these are new to my collection and two are upgrades. If anyone has extras, I would be willing to trade for them! I am at 25/52, but still need upgrades on almost all of them.

Below is the Flickr of the cards I have so far. My goal is to have all of them in SGC 4 or higher grades at the end.

Yogi, Hodges, and last but not least, Ted Williams arrived today. And with that, 1955 Topps is complete.

Feeling accomplished today.

Took me almost five years, but I filled the final spot in my mid-grade 1952 Bowman set today.

The honor went to Johnny Pesky. Here's a pic of me filling the final hole in the binder. I'll organize some pics of the "good stuff" and post them soon.

Haha. OK, that's fair. I agree that Feller and Campanella qualify as "good stuff". I guess those early 50's sets have so many good players, it's easy to take them for granted.

(Case in point, page 1 in the set binder has HOFers Berra, Minoso, Reese and Robin Roberts all in the first nine cards, and Bobby Thompson also makes an appearance at card #2 with the back of his card describing the "shot heard 'round the world" as it was printed the spring after that game. Great set.)

I'm working on a PSA graded 1960 Leaf set. I just picked up a #96 Kucks and that leave me three from finishing the set. I still need #75 Culp, #85 Stigman and #101 Noren.

I picked up a 74 Topps Baseball set in trade from Gorditadog over the weekend. It will need some work, but I'm happy to have it. The 70 set will hopefully come closer to completion with some possible deals in the very near future. After that, all that will need to be acquired is a 73 Topps set and upgrades for my other sets, particularly 1972.

I had promised myself I'd try to finally get some sets completed here in 2022, rather than always be working on so many sets at the same time that I could never seem to finish any.

Just a couple days ago got the last card I needed to finally complete my '48 Sports Thrills set. Had needed card #12, "Most Dramatic Home Run", featuring Gehrig and Ruth, for quite some time. Finally pulled the trigger on a really nice raw VG-EX+ one Gregg Morris had. Felt really good to cross that last card off my want list.

I've finished the '67 Topps set with the last few cards from the high numbers arriving in November/December. My procrastination on this one cost me dearly. I remember passing on Seaver rookies going for under $200 thinking I'd find better deals down the road. LOL Same for the Carew at <$100. But it's in the rear view now.

On the other side of the tracks, I put together three Philadelphia Gum football sets ('65, '66 and '67) without much fuss or bother. All since last spring. I had the '64 set done long ago so I've scratched off one hobby goal, the four Philly sets are now in one big binder along with wrapper examples from each..

Congrats, Bob. I have not yet collected this set although I really should since I grew up in Havertown, PA (a Philadelphia suburb) which is where it was produced according to the back of the card.

I have 6 or 7 of the aluminum printing plates that don't fit my collection. I bought them not 100% sure if they were legit, but from my research they're somewhat common in '62s. I'm not much of a '60s collector so you'd know way more than I regarding them. Five or six are team cards and one is the Boyer with someone else horizontal card. Since you're going after a master set they might fit well so let me know if interested.

Default 1954 Bowman

This is the first baseball set from the fifties I've ever built and decided to go with one that had fewer cards as an entry point. What a great set and honestly, I think, undervalued in regards to the top HOFers. The Mays, Williams and Mantle are all very reasonable, especially considering they are still early releases for Mays and Mantle. The others like Berra, Matthews, Snider, Campy and Hodges were all less than $100 in presentable condition. I'm down to four cards and one of those is Mantle, but I'm being disciplined on picking up the right one for the allocated budge. My Williams is pretty rough but I really just wanted to complete it in binder for viewing and kept my budget to $2500 for the entire set. If I can pick up a Mantle that is not destroyed for ~$500 then I'll have accomplished it within budget.

I picked up 77 more cards towards the completion of my 72 set. Series 1-4 are now completed.

10 more and series 5 will be done. 71 more and the set will be finished. The 71 are all series 6.

That is a neat connection to the set. Great set with great players. A little pricier to finish nowadays as in addition to the Ruth-Gehrig card there's a Jackie Robinson card highlighting his breaking of baseball's color barrier. Like most early Robinson cards, the value of this card has risen greatly recently. But it actually still seems to be a little bit more underappreciated than a lot of his other 1940's card issues. A great little set to go after, highlighting some of baseball's most iconic feats and players. Good luck if you do decide to go after the set.

I started my 1973 Topps Baseball by receiving 100 singles from Kevvg1026 for about the same amount of 1972s that I had as extras. Both lots included mid-grade cards in general with the inclusion of minor stars and lesser demand HOFs.

Default 61 Topps baseball complete

I finally completed my mid grade 61 Topps baseball set. The Roger Maris AS card should be waiting for me when I get home from vacation.
Now I have to figure out what is next. I'm leaning towards football.

Nice work Jeff! That is no easy set. I had to reply as the Maris AS was my last card as well!

Default Set Collectors - Report in your progress!

1971 Topps, Black Beauties: Started Saturday, completed Saturday. Bought a EX-MT or so set that had been hand-collated at my LCS. Oh Lord. What have I done...

Please note in the case of the Ryan & the Clemente, I already had these cards in my PC, and simply paired the existing ones up with their new set buddies because well… I was drunk on 1971 Topps:

Those 71s look TIGHT!!!! That Dusty/Tom/Baylor was the last card when I completed my 71s...and I need to upgrade it.

You've saved money buying the whole set and I don't even know what you paid...haha. I ROUTINELY go through and buy upgrades for mine hoping to get even close to the corners you've shown. I feel I have basically bought this set card by card TWICE...no joke. I bet if I went back this afternoon I'd buy 50 more!

Nice Drysdale too...I love building the 65s...

Thanks so much. I do feel like I got it at a bargain. Without saying what I paid, I will say it was about what VG-EX sets seem to go for on eBay when you see them. I feel like that Dusty / Baylor card has a shot at a 7 or higher, it's sharp and clean and well centered to boot.

Feel free to send that card my way if you don't want it... I agree..can't see much wrong with it, and that's a TOUGH card!

Haha. I am definitely holding on to them all. There are a few which will eventually need to be replaced due to centering issues (Ernie Banks...) and then like I noticed the Steve Carlton is minty, but has a small wrinkle. There aren't many like that though. I looked at all the bigger cards very closely before I bought it.

Congrats on great looking set.
I kind of wish that my son had completed his set. He was about 50 cards away from completion and decided he no longer wanted to do it. He sold off some of the stars and then sold the rest to buddy.

I just recently completed transactions with a couple net54 members for 24 more 1972 Topps High Number cards. That will get me down to needing 36 more cards to complete the set. I am getting close and I am getting antsy too!

Cheers,

B.T.

Great work on the 61 set Jeff...I know how tough that one is! Funny, my brother (who is a lurker here) is down to 14 I believe and I know he needs that Maris All Star...he will be happy to know he has one less person to compete with...sneaky tough card! Nicely done...61 is no joke...

12 more 72 Topps High Numbers on their way to me thanks to Mintacular

That will bring me to needing 24 more cards to complete the base set.

I'm starting to get all misty eyed thinking about the finish!

Cheers,

B.T.
