Default John Ward auto authenticity?

Posted By: Scot

Does anybody know what a John "Monte" Ward autograph looks like? If you're an expert or even have an opinion, let me know if this looks authentic to you.
I couldn't find another to compare.

If it isn't his signature, someone made a pretty good effort to duplicate it. Looks very similar to the ones I've seen. Is that a thick fountain pen stroke or a felt tip?

A few years ago there was quite a few Buchners from the same collection sold on eBay with the same fake black signatures across the card. They are all non authentic signatures. I used to have a couple of the cards including a different Ward. Except the cards I had the fake signatures was partially erased.

Here are the scans I have saved in my computer.

...would probably be a no no.

SGC/JSA have a $20 service for authenticating and encapsulating signed baseball cards. Can't beat it.

FKW,
Does this look familiar? I ended up buying this card from you. I never even considered the partially erased name to be an autograph. Just thought someone had written O'Rourke's name across it, long ago.

Wow, This thing could be real. It cost me $185 dollars + shipping to authenticate/encapsulate a Ty Cobb signature through PSA/DNA. This card would look good with SGC/JSA holder IMO. I may try authenticating with that comparison. Thanks again for the help.

If that signature is real then that will be one heck of a 19th century card. Ward died in 1925 so it's not like he was signing lots of autographs for collectors. I guess he probably signed a lot of documents in his day but you've got to figure the number of cards with his signature is very scarce. Did I use the word "scarce" correctly?

When these cards hit eBay a few years ago, there were a dozen or so of the cards that had these signatures (all HOFers I believe). Some were partially erased. They were deemed forgeries by people who discussed them on the chat boards at the time (Net54? Fullcount?), but I dont remember what all was said about them.

Hmmm... That partially erased signature on Frank's Ward looks very close to the one Steve posted, also. Gotta say, now I'm just a little intrigued about my Jim O'Rourke.

Ken, The signatures Ward/O'Rourke appear to be from a different hand IMO. It would certainly be interesting to compare your O'Rourke with a confirmed authentic signature.

Yeah Scot,

I realize that the signatures on Frank's two cards are from different hands. But each seems pretty close to its respective authentic signature that Steve posted. Frank said that he remembers a discussion about those partially erased sigs on several message boards, and that the conclusion was that they were fake. Does anyone recall why? As I said, I certainly didn't purchase the O'Rourke card thinking that it was autographed. I just thought someone had written his name on it. Now, I'm starting to wonder! Interesting...

I know that there is a 100 percent chance this item is fake. The sad thing is there is probably a 50 percent chance of getting it authenticated.
