Default tips on researching 19thC amateur photo

If it's not major or minor league, I don't know much about researching a photo. This one has a Chilicoth Mo. studio mark (J. B. Huffman) , on the back is an 1899 date and the names and home towns of the players. The towns are Purdin, Irene, and Grant City Mo. The owner of the photo would like some tips on researching this.

Contacting local historical societies if the towns still exist seems like an obvious starting point.

Looks like Chillicothe Normal School which later became the Chillicothe Business College...CBC Ducks were a national power in college football in the 1910-20s era. Cal Hubbard and John Levi played football for the school in 1920. The college is no longer there, but they have a historical society and museum and you can contact them...I'd bet there is a yearbook where these guys could be identified.
