I think the Cubs might be able to contend..... definitely not the Sox:

Cubs (1876-Present – even better if predecessor 1871-1875 NA team included)
C- G Hartnett
1B - Cap Anson
2B - Hornsby (unless he can DH)/Sandberg
SS - Ernie Banks
3B - Santo
OF - Sosa
OF - B. Williams
OF - King Kelly (also some C)
P- J. Clarkson
P- Alexander
P - M. Brown
P - Jenkins
P - C. Griffith or AG Spalding (you have to include the NA or extrapolate his 1876 season)
RP - Sutter (Eck, Wilhelm, Gossage and Smith also played for the Cubs at one time or another)
U - F. Chance
PH - Cuyler
PR - B. Dahlen
PH (runners on base) - Hack Wilson
Other Defensive Subs - H. Duffy, J. Evers, J. Tinker
MGR - F. Chance

ChiSox (1901-Present)
C - Fisk
1B F. Thomas (unless he can DH instead)
2B E.Collins
SS - George S Davis
3B - Weaver/Ventura (no one particularly good available)
OF - J. Jackson
OF - Al Simmons
OF - Dick Allen
P - Walsh
P - Faber
P- Cicotte
P - Lyons
P - Pierce/C. Griffith
RP - Wilhelm (or Thigpen for one season)
U - Minnie Minoso/Luke Appling
PH - Baines (of course)/Ordonez
PR - Raines/Aparicio
Other Defensive Subs - Nellie Fox, Ray Schalk & Kaat
MGR - No one did especially well.... Maybe Gleason, Griffith, Lopez, Fielder Jones or Tony LaRussa ???

I’m confident that my All-Time Padre team could give any team in the majors a run for their money. (OK, maybe not…but they might have a 50/50 shot against an All-Time Devil Ray team.)

The Orioles might be second best:

C Wilbert Robinson
1B Eddie Murray
2B Bobby Grich
3B Brooks (no last name needed)
SS Cal Ripken
OF Frank Robinson
OF Willie Keeler
OF Don Baylor
P Jim Palmer
P Dave McNally
P Mike Mussina
P Mike Cuellar

Okay, technically I am mixing two franchises, but they all did play in Baltimore, and were Orioles. On the bench we have Lee May, Rafael Palmeiro, Miguel Tejada, Luis Aparicio, John McGraw, Hugh Jennings, and, as very temporary Orioles, Reggie Jackson and Robin Roberts.

The oldest franchise. Yes, you can actually have Spalding pitching to Javey Lopez and Jim O'Rourke backing up Hank Aaron. Spalding left the team after 1875, so technically he didn't play with them after they joined the National League.

GREG - That A's team is impressive.
15 Hall of Famers, incl all starters & relievers and even the manager + Mcgwire & Henderson are not eligible yet.

Here's my all-time team from the Cuban League, the Santa Clara Leopardos.

In spite of only being in the league for 11 seasons, this team would compete with any all-time Major League team including the Yankees.

There are 7 HOFers and another 3 with realistic chances to get in (Suttles, Marcelle, R. Brown). Maybe Bankhead, too. Here's the team:

C – Josh Gibson
1b – Mule Suttles
2b – Frank Warfield
3b – Oliver “Ghost” Marcelle
SS – Willie Wells
OF – Oscar Charleston
OF – Turkey Stearnes
OF – Alejandro Oms
RHP – Satchel Paige
RHP – Martin Dihigo
RHP – Hilton Smith
RHP – Raymond Brown
LHP – Dave Brown
LHP – Luis Tiant, (Sr.)
LHP – Lazaro Salazar
LHP – Cocaina Garcia
U – Sam Bankhead

Scott,
Don't forget about Reggie in there too...I don't know if that outfield would be big enough to hold all those egos.

That team would certainly have clashes, but I think the A's of the 1970's proved that you don't need team chemistry (at least off the field) to win.

Tejada seems like an obvious choice over Barry who played just 900 games and hit 250 with 350 rbi's with the A's. Him and Campaneris are much closer, Campy did have alot more service time with the A's,but Tejada had approx 70 more rbi's in 800 less games with the team so its hard to argue that choice

I would definitely choose Eddie Joost and possibly the immortal Chick Halloway over Barry for A's shortstops

There was a debate on the radio this weekend - who's the better catcher, Bench or Rodriguez? Bench hit HR's when they meant just a little bit more.

Pitchers- Walter Johnson HOF
Bert Blyleven Should be HOF
Jim Kaat
1B- David Ortiz
2b- Rod Carew HOF
ss- Joe Cronin HOF
3b- Harmon Killebrew HOF
rf- Tony Oliva Should be HOF
cf- Kirby Puckett HOF
lf- Goose Goslin HOF
c- Earl Battey
DH- Heinie Manush HOF
Sam Rice HOF

I could have added these Twins players at the end of their careers: Paul Molitor HOF, Steve Carlton HOF, Jack Morris should be HOF, Dave Winfield HOF.

Campaneris would be a great choice for A's shortstop as well - he definitely beats out Tejada in versatility and speed, but Tejada's last couple years with the A's put him over the top for me. You can't really go wrong with either.

Jack Barry is up there, but not in the same league as Campy or Tejada.

Adam, surely you stick Robinson at 2B (or Davey Lopes) and stick in Ron Cey or Beltre (I know, I know, but he did have the one greatest year an NL third baseman ever had) at third.

I know my Phillies certainly aren't 2nd best. Actually if you included all the players who played for the Phils when they were washed up - then this Phils team could technically be 2nd best, but I think the spirit of the question should be listing players who played in their prime for the listed team. For example, Willie Mays really shouldn't be placed on an all time Mets team. So the Phillies aren't 2nd best - not yet anyway :)

Really the Yankees aren’t that much stronger than these other teams (except maybe in terms of depth and the Outfield); the Pitching isn’t really that great although they have a few marginal HOFers I didn’t list like Combs, Pennock, Chesbro and Hoyt.

C YOGI/Bill Dickey
1B Gehrig

3B HR Baker/AROD

RP Rivera/Gossage
PHs: Keeler/Reggie/Bernie Williams/Mattingly/Maris/Munson/Boggs/Nettles/Ruffing
MGR - Huggins/McCarthy/Stengel/Torre (all won multiple WSs)

Actually the Sox (Red) might be able to beat the Giants, Cubs and A's (but probably not the Yankees)

RP Lee Smith/Sparky Lyle/Keith Foulke
U Harry Hooper/D. DiMaggio (Strong Defensive Subs)
PH/DH Manny Ramirez/Conigliaro/Ortiz/Lynn/Rice
MGR - Jimmy Collins/Carrigan/Terry Francona (all won the WS)

with these teams, when 3 of us had all-time teams with both Mays and Anson. Neva happen...

Why are these teams so much more interesting than the all-time? Something about the unity of a team, even over the years, maybe..the As, Giants and Cubs particularly impressive....

How about Chavez on the As?

The "Glory of Their Times" c.d. has a story about a NY Giants team that was basically the same as the pennant winners, but sunk to the bottom because their wives were fighting in the stands.
