Default T206 Ghost Overprint 2-IN-1 Values

Posted By: Seth Nagdeman

I was wondering if someone can help me with information on values for ghost overprints. I have a group of these cards which will be in an upcoming www.19thcenturyonly.com auction and want to get some sort of pricing benchmark. More information on the type of card I am referring to can be found in the T206 Museum at http://t206museum.com/page/ra_ghost_mullen.html and http://t206museum.com/page/ra_ghost_laporte.html. I appreciate any input.

Sincerely,
Seth

If you could attach a scan of your cards, we might be able to give you a better guess! But some overprints have gone for pretty good $ in the past - $1,000-1,500 range.

Seth-There is definitely a market out there for these kind of overprinted cards, hopefully you'll be able to reach it as it seems on eBay like there is a relatively small group that goes after these cards but they are willing to bid quite a bit for them. Wish I could help you with the figures but I honestly don't remember what the ghost images have gone for.
Good luck though,
TBob

Here are images of two of the cards. They are mostly blank backs.

I think the overprint above is Maloney (Rochester). Sure looks weird, though.

Ghost prints are truly fascinating--and some are very pretty as well, with all those colors. I wish I had been the first to discover them, but alas...

A Plank w/ a Wagner overprint or vice-versa. Actually any 206 with one of those guys as a ghost would simply be an amazing card. I've seen a few of the "Dream Card" posts. I think that would be a very unique one.

In any event, Seth those are some fantastic cards!

Hi guys I think it was mentioned in a response above that they would go between 1,000 and 1,500 is a bit much. Maybe if any of the cards had a cigarette ad on the back which would mean that it probably made it into a pack then it might be between 300 and 500. Also all the creases take much of the value away. These are printers scraps that are in rough shape. There are a few of us that collect these but I do not think any of us would pay anything that would come close to 1,000. Rob

That's right, I have seen these overprint before and they used to be in much better condition (no creases at least). I remember Scott Forrest used to have one and he sold it for $450 or something and that one was in far better condition (no crease and in VG condition).

I had one that had three players printed on it, and no creases. As you said, I think it sold for $450. I would expect these to go for about $200-250 apiece, but it really depends on who you get bidding against each other.

Seth,
It is very difficult to put a price on ghost cards. It really depends who the ghost is and how clear the image is. For example there is a Chance on the T206 site that I would love to own. I would guess that it would sell for around $3K.

http://t206museum.com/page/ra_ghost_back.html

I love that card.

A clear image on the card would bring atleast 5-8 times book.

I am looking forward to the auction.

Regards,
Nick

There's a decent tutorial with screenshots here:

I have tried checking that box and still can not upload anything. I have changed the file from jpg to gif to a bmp and still it does not work. I cut the picture down to 66.3 kb and still everytime I try to upload it will not work. Rob

(and I even followed my instructions!)

...maybe it's a temporary Net54 problem - this has happened before. Another thing I'm noticing is that the bitmaps on Seth's post are blank on my screen. To see them, I right-click in the blank area beneath his verbage, then select "save picture" from the resulting pop-up menu. Then I go to a jpeg-viewer and looks at the pics. kind of weird, but it works.

Rob-

If your image name has spaces, you'll need to strip them out.

N54 is putting out a "new & improved" version of the site (no enhancements for end users, BTW). I know they've had a few problems with image uploads. I find that if you refresh the page, images that didn't appear will sometimes show up.

The auction will be online on Friday, March 12th and the auction ends on April 13th. There are about 200 lots. There are 11 Ghost Overprints in all, but I don't think all are going in the auction.

Sincerely,
Seth

I think those ghost overprints are not as scarce as we thought since u could find 11 of them. I think there are still plenty of them out there. They probably worth around $200 to $250 each just like those yellow-brown scraps.

I would love to see scans of all 11 ghost cards if possible. One thing why are the auctions going to run that long? Seems like an very long time to me. Rob
