Well I would think some other key cards are Thorpe, O'Doul, Stengel (if you aren't counting him as a HOF player), Smokey Joe Wood.

Peter:

Do you know which cards are the earliest issues for Thorpe, O'Doul and Wood? I believe Thorpe's would be the Colgan's Chips Tin Top which will be an impossibility unless you are willing to pay $100,000+.

I used the above mentioned website on an almost daily basis when I began compiling my HOF RC collection. I am looking for similar information on great pre-war baseball players who are not in the HOF nor Black Sox-related.

I believe Joe Wood's rookie is his beautiful M116. But those cards were issued over several years, so someone else may have more details on its exact date of issue.

For O'Doul, if you look at only major league cards, it is probably his 1926-31 postcard back exhibit. But, again, these were issued over several years, so it might have some competition from his W517, W554, W553 and some others from the 1929-31 time frame. In the PCL, he has some very early Zeenuts, going back as far as the late teens I believe.

I'm no expert, but I'd probably include the following players:

Orval Overall = 1906 Fan Craze
Bill Joyce = 1895 Mayo Cut Plug
Arlie Latham = 1886 N370 Lone Jack
Dummy Hoy = 1886 Buffalo Bisons ML Team Cabinet

I'm not 100% sure if these are the 1st cards of each, but these are the earliest I've seen of these players.

Also, I'm not sure why everyone and their dog thinks that Hal Chase is a HOFer. He's almost always listed as such in ebay auctions, but he's not.

Any holder of a lifetime record, or other significant accomplishment can be portrayed by showing his rookie and last card (as well as other ways). An overview of some of the applicable milestones could include the following:
- 2 of the top 4 & 4 of the top 13 lifetime BA holders are not in the HOF
- half of the top 6 in stolen bases and runs scored are also not in the HOF
- 4 of the top 10 season BA holders are not in the HOF
- although most are not eligible for HOF status, it does not diminish their achievement.
- then there are shorter term acomplishments, many of whom escaped HOFdom: four triples in a game, strike out 17 batters in a game, when you had to record 4 strikes to get a K, pitch a 26 inning complete game, get 9 hits in a game, etc.
- Plus there are those whos stats are equal or superior to HOFers, yet are not enshrined. An easy to miss example of this follows:

Rip Sewell W/L = 143/97, ERA = 3.48, Ks/Inn Pitched = 636/2119, HOF = no
Candy Cummings W/L = 143/94, ERA = 2.49, Ks/Inn Pitched = 130/2149, HOF = yes
Don Newcombe W/L = 149/90, ERA = 3.56, Ks/Inn Pitched = 1129/2154, HOF = no
Dizzy Dean W/L = 150/83, ERA = 3.02, Ks/Inn Pitched = 1163/1967, HOF = yes

Admittedly there are differences among these statistics, however, in my view, they are trivial, or easily explained by the eras pitched.
