I'd say the T206 Cobb red.

Are you asking which "desirable" card resides in the MOST collections?? Good question.

The T206 Ty Cobb red does seem to be a very common card on EBay... so there probably aren't too many vintage collections that don't have that card in one condition or another.

Since you started with a T206; I would chose the Walter Johnson
card (portrait), of all the ones most collectors have, for my
20th Century candidate.

But, more prominently the card that comes to mind, which perhaps
not as many collectors have, is the N162 Mike "King" Kelly. Not
only this HOFer's card very aesthetically appealing, but his
picture has a very dramatic appearance. The N162 Kelly is my
19th Century candidate.

The N28 Cap Anson card also seems to be everywhere.

although I haven't had one since 1989! For those in need of a N162 Kelly next April, mine graded a 6...(does that go in B/S/T?)

I agree on red Cobbs.

33 Goudey Ruths also seem to be plentiful, too.

I would think that "most" collectors probably don't have either one of these cards, given the price tag. I have a Goudey Ruth but haven't bought a red Cobb yet.

My guess would be that the second-tier HOFers from the T206 or 33 Goudey set would probably be most plentiful in vintage collections.

To get a little more modern, does every collector on the planet have a 1958 Topps Mantle All-Star?

So true. The first Mantle I ever owned was that affordable 1958 All-Star Mantle (second premium HOF'er was the Williams All-Star).

I agree with the above and would go with the Red Ty Cobb T206. That card came later down the line for me.

I'd also pick the T206 Cobb as a 'true classic' early baseball card that is most attainable to the average collector and is most likely to be collections. (I prefer the port green and bat off and least like the bat on).

Perhaps the Matty black hat T206. Lots of them around, classic card which everyone wants.

For vintage card collectors, the most plentiful on ebay traditionally have been the 206 Cobb red background and Matty black cap. Frankly, because they are so available you almost can't help but buy these in any condition you'd like.

As I was completing my set, I left this one and the Elberfeld portrait, as the last two cards to get. I finally broke down and picked up the Red Back in horrid but presentable condition for a little over $200 -- you've seen it, the one with all the paper glued to the back. So, yes, I have that one now, but only within the past few weeks. If this thread had started a month ago, I was the guy with 518 different T206 cards, and not one of them a red backed Cobb.

I picked up the bat on shoulder first, the green background second, the bat off shoulder third...

I wish an N28 Anson would find its' way into my collection. Anyone have one they want to deal?

It is the red Cobb and the n162 Kelly, at least if I look at pre-1900 and post-1900. I have both in my collection for my sets, but these both were cards I had to get initially, in my mind, to even start those sets. They're both iconic in my mind.

...still think the Cobh red background is the classic card most want and have. Besides, Cobb was a better player than Kelly...whoops...

Just love them, and very classic cards. I'm hoping to get the n28 Anson very soon. I'm tired of looking my reprint of it!

Thanks Julie for displaying your N162 "King" Kelly..my favorite

Well, since Cobb is the choice of most collectors, who am I
to differ. But, I will, because the GREEN background Cobb is
far more desirable in my opinion than the RED one.

Just for you Brian, here she is.

I agree that the T206 Cobb red portrait has in to be one of the tops on the list. Also the Matty black cap and Walter Johnson portrait are up there imo.
