Default Modern SPs of Vintage players

I don't know if this quite fits this forum, but I thought I'd try. I'm generally not a fan of modern cards, but in recent years there have been some awesome short-print cards of vintage players printed in modern sets. We all love a good Mantle/Mays/DiMaggio, etc., so why not share them.

To start things off, here's an awesome Satchel Paige from this year's Topps Update set

Sadly I do not currently have any modern cards or modern cards of vintage players
But I respect them
Great thread potential and looking forward to it

I'm weird I guess, in that I like some of these creations and dislike others. I generally am not wild about old players in modern / current year designs. Something about that just looks off to me. However, I like modern players in retro designs (think Topps Archives...) and certain "Cards That Never Were" creations as with the Archives. For example, Mickey Mantle didn't have a 1955 Topps or a 1963 Fleer card, but through the magic of the 21st century - I now have pretty sweet looking examples of both. There is also a '68 Topps 3D Mantle creation that was part of an Archives or Heritage set some years back that is just fantastic. My criteria here used to be eh, this is not real vintage - but think about that for a moment. Another way of looking at it - would a kid in 1968 or 1963 or 1955 think that whatever this variant is is cool? You bet they would. So with the realization that perhaps these types of cards are not the heaviest things in our collections - I don't see why we can't occasionally have some cheap fun with them. The GBSCC cards that were show promos on ebay can be great in this regard, as can the Bob Lemke creations. His '54 Bowman Aaron RC is one of my favorites.

If it's a photo I haven't seen or just a real attractive one, I'm into it.

That said, I probably overpaid on a few, but I've always bought emotionally anyway so that par for the course.

...and I really like the Heritage and Archives sets using older set formats.

One more shot at kickstarting this thread. Here's a 2019 Stadium Club Jackie Robinson.

Not sure if it's a sp but I pulled this one from a pack in the late 2000s and really like it.

Stadium Clubs are a much better buy, as they aren't SP's and feature the same style of 'unusual photographs of older timers'. This is the only SP I've bought. If they were base I'd get them all each year, but the artificially short supply makes me usually pass.

Ha, I'm going to guess that is Frank as a justice on the Kangaroo Court:

I try to stick to my set building, but Judge Frank was too cool not to grab.

I really like the rebooted Stadium Club line, where the greats are regular base cards and use similarly uncommon and excellent photographs.

This is where I am. I used to collect the Heritage sets each year, but when they started getting crazy with SP cards, I just quit buying their cards. Artificially creating scarcity is just a big turn off for me and I am no longer interested in modern cards because of it.

It's very annoying in Heritage. 100 SP's at 8 per box, and with Topps collation a new box will produce 100% ones I don't have or 100% duplicates. I just build a base, keep the SP numbers I get, and leave it at that. It's not worth $2-$10 a card to finish. A lot of years all the big names are SP's, which just makes it even less fun.

The Stadium Club old timers are fun, I pick them out of quarter boxes at my local show. Great looking cards and no artificial scarcity. Not as cool as a playing days card, but basically free

I agree, I would never buy a short printed card. That is the only reason I don't have a 1952 Topps Mantle.

Lucky for you, Mickey is a double print instead of a short print in its series.

I really like the Gypsy Queen Paige in the 2015 set, that uses the same photograph.

If printing cards of the retired greats and famous people get a few collectors interested in older baseball and cards, then I'm all for that
