Default T201 Collecting

I finished this set in 2011 and is still my favorite set. Has their popularity increased over the last 11 years?

Default Love the set.

I’m trying to put a master factory set together, missing Brown and Lord for the factory 30’s. It’s a great set, loved putting it together, but they are still reasonable to het a hold of.

Rob,

Nice set. Yes, T201's have gone up in price over the last 11 years. Perhaps not as much as other popular pre-war cards. The higher end HOF'ers always seem to do well.

A master set will be challenging, but all cards are available in both F649 and F30. Factory #'s appear to be printed on the reverse - at a different time than the cards were printed which I have always thought was odd. Several N54 members have completed a master set. You will find the F30s to be a challenge - Dougherty/Lord and Kling/Cole were the most difficult to obtain. However, all cards were available. Why these 2 F30 cards are rare is one of the mysteries of the set.

Best of luck

I have a strong connection to the set because it contains the only card of Otis Johnson (no relation).

Rob, congratulations on completing the set!

T201 is without a doubt the easiest T-card set to complete which makes it a fun set to collect. There's probably a near complete set available (individually on ebay) at all times.

How many other sets can be completed from that era so easily and relatively inexpensively? There has been an increase in price but that seems to be across the board.

Better get a set before everybody figures it out.

I'm working on this set for this reason. It's the only dead-ball era set I felt I had a reasonable shot at completing. I currently have 33/50, including all of the HOFers, so that goal is within reach even if the price of the commons has ticked up a notch along with everything else.

I understand why it's not as sought after as other sets from the era. The size and structure of the cards are unusual, the player renderings can be crude (bodies and limbs are sometimes positioned or bent in unnatural ways to make the folding concept work, and the images don't always look like the player represented), the Cobb is a back panel, and there's no Wagner or Young.

On the other hand, the artwork is quite beautiful when it works (particularly the Pointillist-style backgrounds of stadiums, cityscapes, suburbs, pastoral countrysides, and skies at dusk), the set includes five of the first eight players elected to the Hall of Fame, the cards feature statistics (including Cobb and Lajoie's respective batting averages from the year of the infamous Chalmers Award), and the folding concept is fun. And when I show my collection to non- or casual collectors, the T201s tend to stand out.

In conclusion, I think they're great, but don't start chasing them quite yet. I'll be happy if they continue to be relatively overlooked until I can complete my set.

I like the concept and am biased towards Mecca sets, but I think these are hurt significantly by not having pictures that look like the players very much. The design dictates the legs must be shared, but it doesn’t dictate the faces have to be how they are, often resembling the pictures player but hardly really rendering them accurately. I’ve picked up a few of the commons over the years as they are always pretty affordable on almost any budget.

Ironically enough, I was late night, early AM eBay shopping and stumbled across a Lord/Dougherty factory 30, putting me at 99/100 of the master set. Just looking for Mordecai in a factory 30 now!

That is quite an accomplishment. I don't believe the other master set collectors have sold their Lord/Dougherty F30's - which now makes a total of 4. I don't think Brown F30 will be as difficult.

Congrats!

Holy hell! I didn't realize there were only a couple of others floating around! I feel really lucky now to have grabbed it. I have seen the Brown, but always one bid off, so the hunt continues!

thanks for the info!

The Fact. 30 Lord/Dougherty & Kling/Cole are super difficult. Thanks to Cliff I have both for my master set. I believe the count is at 5 Lord and 4 Kling. Congrats on a super rare pickup.

What’s funny is that I picked up a graded Kling without realizing it was a 30. The Lord was a case of dumb luck, being on eBay at 1am for no apparent reason! The chase is on for Brown and I’ll be done.

Default T201 Master Set!

Hey Fellow T201 Collectors! Nice to hear from you all, great post Rob! Welcome to the club, I know before long you will come over to the Master Set Dark side…. It’s a blast! As you know I love this set and the hunt for the two Factory 30 cards is a super fun hunt. That combined with the number of HOF’s in the set, the weird and crazy miscuts and awesome card backs, this set is one to shoot for!

I completed my Master set however I continue to upgrade to high quality SGC graded cards (shout out to Keith Temple for the NM cards!). Likely the way SGC is now grading everying “A” or “miscut” the high grade days are long gone ☹ Never truly complete, I am working on a full set lower grade “miscut” cards. Usually at card shows I can get them cheaper as I tell the dealer that the card is “miscut” secretly knowing that I love the card.

Attached are photos of a small portion of my Mecca World with boxes, coupons, hi grades, miscuts and posters…

Best of luck on your sets!

Cliff

Cliff,

As we have discussed many times nice job! It looks like you have taken your Master Set to another level with the cig packs. Do you have any top-to-bottom miscuts? The top-to-bottom miscuts are not common and the reason we have not been able to piece together an entire print sheet yet.

Interesting green stripe at the top - I haven’t seen a green sheet border on a T card miscut before.

Looking at the images of all the T201 set online on the Old Cardboard site, it looks like the card above Bender could only be either Clarke/Byrne or Titus/Dooin, as those are the only two cards that are completely green (grass) at their bottom borders.
