Default Baseball Card for Lou Rochelli?

Posted By: Richard Masson

Played a few games for the Dodgers in 1944. I don't know much about sets issued between 1941 (PlayBall) and 1948 Leaf, but is anyone aware of a card issued for him? Perhaps a Dodgers postcard set?

Default Baseball Card for Lou Rochelli?

From what I understand, the Dodgers issued team sets of 6 1/2 inch x 9 inch B&W photos from 1940 to 1943, and then they started up again in 1946. Your best bet might be a minor league set ... I looked up Rochelli, and it turns out he managed in the Dodgers organization for a variety of teams from 1947 to 1958 ... it also appears he played in Canada for several teams in the 1940s ...

The most interesting thing I found on Rochelli was an entry from Jackie Robinson's "I Never Had It Made," in which Robinson credits Rochelli with helping him to become a better second baseman, presumably during the year he spent with Montreal in 1946. He calls Rochelli a "young and talented second baseman." He expected Rochelli to resent him, but instead, Rochelli goes out of his way "to teach me the tricks." He also said Rochelli's "generosity and friendliness stood out "vividly." So Rochelli played his part in baseball history ...

There was a card issued by Target depicting guys who played for the Dodgers. His card is # 1055 in that set. Of course, that's not what you're asking because it's not exactly vintage.

Alan took the words right out of my mouth. It might as well have been a Jim Steinman composition.

Those Target sets, although modern, are wonderful in their effort to find photos of even the most obscure players. As far as I know, they didn't locate images of Charlie Osgood or Clancy Smyres. Jeez, those guys are even tough in photo format!!!

I knew you guys would find something. Does anyone have a scan of the Target card they can send me?

I don't have that, but do have his autograph somewhere. If it's of any use to you, he was a wonderfully obliging signer through the mail.

I don't have a scan, either. Jodi took the words out of my mouth, too. This set depicts a few obscure Jewish players, so it's a way to acquire images of these guys.
