Default 1927 W560 question?

Posted By: Jim Thierfelder

I recently purchase a 1927 W560 of Sam Gray to give to a friend of mine (Sam Gray's neice). The card depicts Sam Gray as a member of the St Louis Browns. The problem is that Sam did not become a member of the Browns until he was traded by Connie Mack from the Athletic's in December of 1927. Were these cards produced that late in the year? Wrongly designated as 1927? Or were they produced over a period of time beginning in 1927?

I know they are designated as strip cards but actually came in sheets. But does anyone know how they were distributed?

Now that I have the card in hand, I am think about putting a set together as it would be something I could complete fairly cheap and in a relatively short period of time compared to the T206 set I am working on. Does anyone know where I can find a checklist?

You can probably find a checklist via google, but I scanned in the checklist from the 2007 Sports Collectors Digest Catalog of Baseball Cards. You may find that you'll have to pay a little more for these than what they're listed at in the guide. I can't answer your question regarding 1927 vs 1928. Maybe someone else can help with that.

There are also color variations of these cards, which you may want to consider if you decide to put a set together. Here are the three variations, as shown with my Lefty Grove cards.

Brad

Thanks for the checklist and the info. The Sam Gray I purchased was EX and only a couple dollars more than the price guide. Not that one card is any real indicator but the few others I saw tonight were in the relatively same price range. Seems like a guy on a budget might be able to put this set together.

I might pick up a few here and there as a diversion to the white border set.

Jim

Jim, if you are patient you can find the sheets still intact with 16 per sheet. There are 2 different black sheets and 2 dfferent red sheets (not taking into considerstion the dual colored variations).
