I just completed the 1973 baseball set. It took the better part of 6 years or so.

I bought the HoF's first with Schmidt being the first card I bought. $75 bucks for a sharp 5.5.

The last card I needed was #590 Deron Johnson.

Tough card to find centered, however I found one.

Most of my set is un-graded except for the HoF's.

The set is fairly well centered, but again, the cards are difficult in centered condition.

Iconic rookie card in Schmidt with the last cards of Mays and Clemente. The set is loaded with HoF's.

This was the first set I seriously collected as a kid. I loved those cards and while they are long gone, the past 6 years gave me an opportunity to be a kid again.

This set of cards will be with me for the rest of my life. They're my time machine.

Congrats! It's a great set. I'm working on it too (537 / 684). To me, centering can be an issue but it's the black border on the back of the cards that makes higher grades so tough. Well done.

I pulled the PawSox project out of mothballs to pick up George Kottaras at a recent signing. He was my first addition in over seven years. Of the remaining ones I need, I can probably get Kevin Cash the easiest; Ed Rogers is unlikely, and I have not seen a signing recently with Brandon Moss or Jacoby Ellsbury.

1960 Topps I need 103 cards to finish it off of a possible 572, been working on it for almost 4 years now. Been picking up mostly Raw cards and love them in original form

Been wanting to start another set prefer Vintage Topps 1980 or before of some sort.

Also may lower expectations on what condition a little

started the 53 set in psa 5 or better in October of last year.. All need to have good centering appeal with minimal chipping on the black or red edge..

Currently sitting at 215/271 78.47% with the mantle mays paige and robinson as the major roadblocks.. just waiting for the right ones on those and most tht pop up are either low grade or too nice for what I want to pay.. 5.56 overall grade

I am stuck on 500/792 with my 1972 Topps baseball set. I have 11 coming from COMC. But they won’t get delivered until November at this point.

I have some Civil War books that I ordered a while ago that are going to be here this month. So I gotta pay for them first. Civil War history is my other hobby. Sometimes very expensive, especially collecting 1st editions.

Cheers,

Default 1977 Topps completed

Just purchased the final four cards this past weekend to complete my 1977 Topps Baseball set. They should arrive in a couple of days and I am looking forward to putting them in the binder and wrapping up this project. Not an earth-shaking accomplishment, but I am pumped because this was one of the sets I collected as a kid and it certainly holds some great memories.

I finished that set just a couple of months ago. It was a fun run for me for sure.

Congrats!! 1977 Topps is one of those highly underappreciated sets, most likely due to the overproduced era it was released in. But, man, the design works beautifully, there's a ton of great action shots (the Dave Kingman is one of this Mets fan's all time favorite cards), and the All Star banner adds a wonderful prestige to the cards featuring it. We all hoarded those guys like crazy! Great stuff!!!

Finished my 1951 Topps Redback set today when the Boston variation of Tommy Holmes came in the mail from Batters Box. Paid a bit more than I wanted to but had been looking hard for the card for most of 2021.

Next focus card is 1953 Bowman Black and White #39 Casey Stengel to finish that set

There are three Dodger team sets I’m working on that are all down to just one card to go. Technically a full Diamond Stars team set would include both Mungo cards (1934 #19 and 1936 #102), but I’m satisfied with just one.

Missing cards are T205 Wilhelm, Diamond Stars Babich, and Bowman Reese.

I'm down to needing 3 cards to finish my 1958 Topps set. But I'm getting frustrated as I'm having trouble finding them. I've found them for absurd asking prices on eBay, and I'm not going to overpay just to finish a set. So I'm thinking about just giving up on it and moving them all and finding another set to build.

I'm just getting started on a 1957 Topps set, which is my all time favorite set. I only have about 220ish, but I've got a large lot of 100 different (taken off my needs list, so none will be dupes of what I have) that should be here tomorrow or Friday. Most of them are in Ex to NM condition and most are from the very tough midseries set. So that would be put me about 315, which isn't close. But still close enough to try and finish.

Congrats on all the progress you've all made. Ed congrats on the '77 set, it was the first set I was really able to go after completing as a kid so holds a special place in my heart. I just picked up these and now I'm down to just one more card for my '62 set.

Bill— for purposes of a master set are you using the PSA master list or something else ?

Hi Al,

I'm not certain, I started this set a while back and stalled with 3 more to go while other projects took over. I've gone for the "base set" plus all green tints, checklist variations and Buhl & Tasby no logos. Your questions prompted me to check out the PSA list which somewhat confused me as the one I looked at showed 4 different Lee Walls cards:

Face Left pinstripe jersey
Face Right, plain jersey
Face left, pinstripe jersey green tint
Face right, plain jersey - green tint

Link: https://www.psacard.com/cardfacts/ba...1962-topps/173

I have face left, pinstripe jersey which is what I thought was the green tint and face right, plain jersey which is what I have as the regular card. Have you seen 4 variations of Walls in your collecting? I haven't.

Bill

There are only two Lee Walls cards--the face left is green tint, and the face right is not-so green tint--for a total of 691.

Link to PSA checklist for 1962 Topps - Super.

I agree with you Bob, not sure what I found in the link to the PSA list. BTW - nice cards! I only have 690 in my list, the regular and green tints are easy enough, I also have Buhl, Tasby, and Checklist #1 & #7 variations, what am I missing to get to 691?

691 is what PSA lists for the 1962 Super set with the green tints, as opposed to the base and master set lists which do not have the green tints. But for 1962 and well as every other Topps set from the 60s there are at least 2 versions of each checklist. The differences were not intended like the Buhl and Tasby cards, but exist because the cards were double printed. They may never be added to the 691 but should. Most of the rest of these are just recurring print defects

CL 2 # 98...darker versus lighter print on front, note location of y in 119 Murphy, and how high the black bar goes up on left

CL 3 is recognized for 2 versions, List 3 or List, 3. But on the no comma the left black border can be in or out of the white

CL 4 # 278 can have light or dark wood and the names and boxes are more even on one version. I think the printing of names is also lighter or darker

CL 5 #367 has lighter or darker print of names and on lighter version there is upper left border defect. Plus 354 Mejias

Other print oddities, all recurring...Sawatski with blue near the flagpole

Babe as a Boy, non tint, slash by the A

Moon, non tint getting red

Pizzaro, who has some great defects in 72 also

Sadeki, blue between the legs

Duren, slash on neck

O'Toole, early mask issue ?

McDaniel, wrist issue and transition card

And the growing Dick Hall lip fungus

Ah yes, I did, I still need that one as well, looks pretty plentiful based on a quick ebay search.

Al, nice "collage" of variation and print defects. I don't tend to go for the print defects so by your definition I'm putting together the Super Set - has a nice ring to it!

That’s a nice accomplishment on the 65 set. Congratulations.

Default Set Collectors - Report in your progress!

I rarely post in this thread, as I am rarely able to report progress like this: But today I picked up a lot of nearly 300 ‘72 commons at the LCS to add to my fledgling start that was already at home in the box. Haven’t finished cataloging all of it yet, but with today’s addition I figure I am somewhere in the neighborhood of 380 out of the 787 card set, or approaching the halfway mark.

For somebody who is not a set collector by nature, I’m not sure why I decided to go for the postwar monster as my first endeavor, LOL!

I like the color blazing 72 set. For a time I debated ending my Topps Heritage run there, but decided to hang on until 1975.... assuming Topps makes it that far

Yeah, this year's Heritage has been a nice companion. Though Lord knows I'm not going after that whole set.

Default 1954 Bowman

I'm 31 cards away from a 54 Bowman set. First post war(pre 1980) set I've ever worked on as a pre war and boxing collector. Been fun. I started a 53T set which will be my next venture and about 60% complete on it.

Finally finished this set with this card to go with my 48-55 Bowman sets. Unfortunately it was in a 7 which I will crack for my otherwise ungraded set

Nice! I am closing in on finishing 1965. Only 24 cards to go, but Clemente, Aaron, Mays, and (oddly enough) Uecker seem to elude me at every turn. I started the set 3 years ago and I expect it will take at least another year to finish.

As it is, I went to a show today and managed to knock off 4 out of the 7 cards I need to finish my 1960 set. And, thank God for small favors, only 1 of the 3 remaining cards is a Mantle.

I knew Uecker was popular as a broadcaster, but I couldn't believe the prices for his card. It's one of the SPs, but I ended up paying HOF prices for it. If you're a stickler for centering the #22 Charlie Smith is a real challenge too.

Spent the day Sunday at Chantilly, the biggest show I usually attend any given year. Picked up a couple of '52s, a dozen '54 Bowman, a handful of '64s including Gibson (which was a tough 6th series card), four '59 Fleer Ted Williams and a small stack of 1980 Topps.

Current standing at:

'52 Topps Low numbers: 299/310
'54 Bowman: 194/225
'59 Fleer Ted Williams: 58/80
'64 Topps: 577/585
'80 Topps: 694/728

I can taste the finish line on these, except for the '52 Mays. After knocking these out though, I'm going to pause the set building and concentrate on slimming down the collection.

Down to 1 more for a 1963 Fleer set.....# 57 Elroy Face.

I know check ebay......but I refuse to win a single card, pay $4.50 shipping just to have it arrive in a PWE.

Robert- you are a man of great patience. I think if I was down to one I would not be able to contain myself. Good luck on wrapping up that set. One of my favorites
