Default 1971 auction of a T206 Plank

While looking through the June 1971 issue of The Trader Speaks, I came across the ad below for an auction of a T206 Plank.

Given the seller, I'm doubtful the Plank wasn't legit, but what's up with the top corners of the image's background?

Any thoughts?

The shape and angle of those corners is reminiscent of those triangular sticky thingamabobs used in scrapbooks to secure photos.

Or perhaps later down the line strips of tape that were used, and then removed... taking with them the top layer?
