Brooks Robinson and the Baltimore Orioles

Posted for Clint (ksfarmboy) This is a 6" Orioles button with easel back. I haven't seen this large of button with the Walsh bird before. A lot of smaller one's, but that's BIG.

So, do you like the Walsh bird or the Hartzell bird better? That's a toughie...

Is that cool or what!! Where did you acquire the viewer? Well, break out the Brooksie and watch it for us...

Here are the football Action Cartridges...Unitas and Alworth had 2 each so I only have 5 of the 7 but have one of each player...also have a couple of Hockey, a few Skiing and even a Volleyball one

There are various viewers...cartridges were front loaded...here are 2 examples...hold viewer with left hand and crank with right hand...can crank forward and backward as fast or slow as you want..need a well lit place...think if it as a Viewmaster with moving pictures...I have viewed most of what I have...they hold up well

I assume they might have done them each year. 1961 is the earliest I've seen. I try to pick them up whenever I find a year I don't have.

Looks to be a 50's Oriole mug to me. If I were to guess I'd go with 1956, but I'm not real sure. I know I have a pin and pennant with the same Oriole bird, but don't have that particular mug. Looks real nice! Does it have any stamping on the bottom of the mug?

Any Orioles pictured on those? I remember having a ton of those when I was young (probably not really baseball related). If I can recall correctly I believe they were mostly dinosaurs.

Here are a few pieces related to the 1966 Orioles. First is an invitation to an Open House with a watch party of highlights from the previous World Series. Since the party is in January 1966, that means it's Twins-Dodgers highlights. I'd love to find an invitation to the January 1967 party.

Second is a letter and envelope for a person receiving their tickets to the 1966 World Series.

I mentioned earlier that my dad was originally from NJ and when he was young he was friends with the Sawatski kids, (Marcella, Chester and Carl), when they lived in Mountain View, NJ. My father played both football and baseball with Carl when he was younger and followed Carl’s career in baseball. My dad really liked the Sporting News picture with Carl and Brooks since he was a fan of both of these great guys. It’s just a fond memory I have of my father telling me all about growing up and playing sports with some really tough and unique individuals (was definitely a different era).

Day 29 (January 29, 2020 – 029)

Brooks Robinson Sporting Goods Company, Inc. was one of the businesses Brooks was involved in during his career. This is a patch from that time frame when the company was doing well.

I think it’s cool that it mentions on Brooks’ 1974 Topps #160 card that “Brooks has an interest in a sporting goods store” as part of the cartoon on the back. I personally like the look of the O-PEE-CHEE card a little better, so I’ll picture the front/back of the OPC and just the back of the Topps.

1971 Poster

In 1954, a set of Orioles photo pack pictures were issued. They were B&W 6x8 photos very similar in texture to the Jay Publishing photos from the late 50's and 60's. Individual photos and team sets occasionally show up. There are probably a few on eBay currently. Here's the list of the 25 players in the original set.

Vern Bickford, Neil Berry, Joe Coleman, Gil Coan, Chuck Diering, Jim Dyck, Jim Fridley, Howie Fox, Jehosie Heard, Billy Hunter,
Darrell Johnson, Dick Kokos, Lou Kretlow, Don Lenhardt, Dick Kryhoski, Don Larsen, Dick Littlefield, Sam Mele, Les Moss, Duane Pillette, Vern Stephens, Marlin Stuart, Bob Turley, Vic Wertz and Bobby Young.


What most people don't realize is that an additional 8 photos were printed during the season. An update set if you will. I've found these updated photos to be much harder to find than the original 25. Here's the list, along with scans, of the extra 8 , bringing the total to 33 photos.

Day 30 (January 30, 2020 – 030)

Brooks’ professional career started with a minor league team the York White Roses in 1955. York is in Pennsylvania and the White Roses were in the Piedmont League during the time Brooks was playing. I really only have one thing from this team and that’s a small PM10 pin of the White Roses. Alan (BaltOrioles) posted a great looking White Roses program on post #6.

York had the first bronze statue of Brooks, designed by sculptor Lorann Jacobs, and was installed in Brooks Robinson Plaza in 2008. The Plaza was right outside the York Revolution Santander Stadium, the minor league stadium name at the time, and shows Brooks in a White Roses uniform signing an autograph for two young children. The York Revolution put out a figure during the time frame of the statue of Brooks and he’s shown signing a baseball.

Today, I offer up some drawings I know a little about, but would be interested if those from the Baltimore area know more about them.

I have five drawings of Orioles players from 1978-79 done by artist Bob Leffler. I know there are more out there, but don't have any kind of checklist. In one of the Orioles 1978 programs is an ad for his art. It looks like the ad is for original color drawings. Mine are not original drawings, but look to be produced for resale. They are B&W, dated and on regular 8 1/2" x 11" paper.

Anyone with more info, a checklist or have any for sale, let me know.

I've seen the pin before, but always passed since I wasn't sure if it was from 1954-55, when the Roses were affiliated with the Orioles.

It does look 1950's. Do you know if it can be traced to a certain year or just a span of years?

This is a film transparence from the Topps Vault I purchased many years ago. I believe this was from the same photo session that Topps used for the 1972 and 1973 Candy Lid. I like this smiling image much better than the one used on the Candy Lids.

I believe I have the Brooks example packed away somewhere. Mine, like yours, is not an original drawing, but a print of the drawing. Personally I wasn't crazy about the drawing style so didn't try to pursue any others.

I'm not an expert by any means on pins, but I know it's early due to the style, but don't know whether it dates to the '54-55 Roses when they were affiliated with the Orioles. I know I wanted "something" of the York White Roses and this is what was available. Also, I'd like to pick up a program like yours as well as a pennant if at all possible.

Love it Scott! I have a few transparencies that I'd like to show sometime this year. How did you get it to show up like that; looks pretty good. I tried to scan and also a tried to take a picture and it turned out really dark. Any suggestions? I'll keep messing with it and hopefully I can get it a tad bit better.

I scanned it and then adjusted the hue/saturation in photoshop. It was pretty dark before I adjusted it .Hope that helps.

Thought I’d end the month with a pretty cool Rawlings advertising piece. I’ve showed this a couple of times on Net54 and a couple other members have this same poster as well, but it’s a really nice display item especially when framed.

Not sure why I am up a 3:30 in the morning but I figured I would check the Brooks thread. Mark that is one nice Rawlings poster. I have never been fortunate enough to to own that one. I remember only seeing it once at a show and I passed up on it. It looks great! It would only look better if it was hanging in my house !

I always have loved the oddball issues. Here is mine of my all time favorite Oriole. I like it because it's on a off white card stock and has that warm vintage feel to it.
