Default Catcher pose cards in the 1912 zeenut set?

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy

Since I haven't made any progress collecting 1912 Home Run Kisses for the past few years, I have decided to focus on collecting catcher pose cards in the 1912 zeenut set.

I have been able to pick up six(6) so far: Otto Auer, Drummond Brown, Barney Burch, Harry Cheek, William "Hap" Hogan, and "Howling" Dan Howley.

I have also seen scans of four(4)other catcher poses cards of: Claude Berry, Mickey Lalonge, Carl Mitze, and Hugh Smith.

I know that two(2) catchers are found in batting stances: Walter Schmidt and John Tiedeman.

I have kept a library of scans for the 1912 zeenut set for a few years, so I have eliminated quite a few players from the list that aren't in a catcher's pose. However, I still haven't seen a few dozen cards in the set.

How many more catcher pose cards are there in the set?

Other catchers in the set, which I haven't seen cards of include: Brooks (LA) and August Fisher.

I have also seen a card of Doane (Portland), and I'm not sure he has a catcher's mitt or a first baseman's glove?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have any scans please post.

Thanks,

Patrick

Here is Walter Doane, it looks like a catchers mitt to me.

Patrick, I was a little bored so I did some searching and according to my records these are the players that spent time as catchers during the 1912 Season that are included in the Zeenuts set... Interesting that Walter Doane wasn't a catcher but may have been working out a pitcher...

LA- Walter Boles, Clarence Brooks, & Hugh Smith
Oak- Carl Mitze & John Rohrer
Port- John Burch, Gus Fisher, Dan Howley, & Mickey LaLonge
Sacto- Harry Cheek, Ralph Kreitz, & Harry Price
SF- Otto Auer, Claude Berry, & Walter Schmidt
Vernon- Sam Agnew, Drummond Brown, Hap Hogan, & John Sullivan

Rhett,

Thanks for the info.

I noticed you listed John Burch. I had a Portland Beavers website list rosters, and they listed Barney Burch as a player in 1912. I noticed also that John Tiedeman isn't listed with Oakland on your list?

Thanks again,

Patrick

Here is my updated info regarding catcher in the 1912 zeenut set:

Confirmed catching pose:

Otto Auer
Claude Berry
Drummond Brown
Barney Burch
Harry Cheek
William "Hap" Hogan
"Howling" Dan Howley
Mickey LaLonge
Carl Mitze
John Rohrer
Hugh Smith

Catchers (Scans needed):

Fred Abbott
Sam Agnew
Walter Boles
Clarence Brooks
Gus Fisher
Ralph Kreitz
John Sullivan

Catchers (Batting)

Walter Schmidt
John Tiedeman
Harry Price

Further clarification:

John Rohrer...Is he a catcher or a first baseman?

Fred Abbott...There is a Abbott catcher in the 1911 Obak and 1911 zeenut sets, is he still a catcher for LA?

Is the Agnew in the set Sam, and is he a catcher?

If anyone can provide further clarification or scans it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Patrick

Patrick,

The Abbott in 1912 is Ody Abbott.

The Agnew in 1912 is Sam Agnew (the same guy as in M101-4, this Agnew is not the same one as in 1911 Zee-he was a pitcher)

I have John Teideman at 1st Base in 1911 and 1912

I have John Burch (not Barney)

John Rohrer played as a catcher from 1912-15, & 1919-20 in the PCL

Rhett,

Thanks again for you information. One of the things I have learned is that there still is incorrect information on some of the checklists regarding the correct players' names. I have tried to confirm this information by looking at other sources. When players never made it to the Major Leagues, the task is even more difficult.

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks again,

Patrick
