Default Dimaggio painting value? '49 Dimaggio watercolor

Hey Ya'll,
Got a request for valuation on this painting. I don't believe it's a well known artist. It's sort of hard to make out but the person asking says he thinks it's "Hazellton" or something close? It is a very attractive 23x21 water color depicting DiMaggio in the 49 World Series, is the description I received. Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

IMO, it is poorly done, but I do like the somewhat folky style it has. If I had it, I would frame it up and mark it 150-200. I dont see a whole lot of value in it

I would describe the piece as an "After Arthur Smith" 50's -60's watercolor. As it sits unframed, I would guess $50-$150 as a display piece.

Here is another "after Arthur Smith" of the same image.

Here is a website where people can go to look up a painting if they can read some or all of the signature...

www.askart.com

I did not see anything under H for hazell__ that looked like this style. An "after" is when a non-professional, or sometimes a professional painter copies someone else's work and either signs their own name, or the name of the original artist.

Leon, To me it looks very well done...seems to have DiMaggio's gait down very well...Colors are superb...details like the equipment, shoes, socks, shin guards, umps mask are all excellent...the green of the field is great......The artist signature tells me a lot about a painting...this one is pro level...To me it looks like an accomplished artist did it...A painting like that I wouldn't even need to know if it was by a listed artist...One thing I really like about it is the brush strokes in the margin...so you know it's a painting...Some works are very hard to tell it it's a print or a painting...

The looming question about it is...was it painted during DiMaggio's playing days...if it was....phew!..to me it has a feel of from the period...Let me know what you need for it.

I second Carlton's statement. Working in watercolor can be very difficult when striving for detail, imo. From a personal standpoint, I'd much rather work in oil when an attention to detail is desired. I believe it does have a folkart quality due to the size of Joe's shoulders in relation to his head, but it's cool. Definitely worth several hundred dollars at a minimum, imo.

I can't critique this from an artist perspective but it really comes down to personal taste as a buyer. I agree with previous posters on the folk art style to this painting.

For me, if it has some age to it and of course eye appeal then I'm willing to pay more for it. I also think it's great that there is an artist signature....I've seen several unsigned paintings which to me makes it way too anonymous, impersonal.

This particular painting is very attractive imo. While I don't purchase painting from this time period, I think that $200+ would not be unreasonable at all. Again just personal opinion from a buyer's perspective.
