Default Getting Back to the basics?

The thing that brought me to this forum was the overall love of baseball cards shared by the members of the board. It’s great a place where advanced collectors and beginning collectors could share pictures, stories and even dreams about baseball cards and collecting them.

I guess my point is that as of late or maybe it’s just me? There are more posts on eBay scammers. Posts on how auction houses should conduct their businesses. Right down to major conspiracy theories. I know all the intentions are good but I just don’t think we will ever stop scammers no matter how many posts we make.

So my question is for my holiday wish maybe we can get back to the basics. So before you post your link to that seller with questionable feedback who’s selling the Wagner card. Or before you post on that PSA 4 that should be a 7. Stop take a breath and post a picture of a card or two maybe even tell a story. We’re collectors not the “World Baseball Card Police”.

Just my thoughts feel free to beat me up now.

Pictures and stories of how everyone got the prized cardboard would be great. Here is my poor contribution. Got it from Ben Fisher! I do love Ty Cobb cards - I just can't afford the really nice ones. I take what I can get and treasure them just the same.

I agree John. Seems like the board is more of a place to argue and insult others. A case in point, a month or so ago I started a thread asking people to share unusal stories about players that others may not have been aware of. I mean, I don't just collect HOF'ers. I collect people who have had a significant impact on the game, or players that have interesting stories, whether it's Merkle's boner, Snodgrass's drop, Bridwell's hit in the boner game, Luke Sewell being the first player to suggest dragging the infield during the game. Anyway, you get my point. I thought it would be a great discussion with people sharing lots of great stories. One person responded. I was a little disappointed because I feel that is what this board should be about. I was thrilled to find this sight some 7 or 8 months ago and have learned a lot by reading, but it really does seem to be going south quickly. I too would like to get back to the basics. That might be asking too much. Seems like there is very little real collector's info. Seems like too many people just want to prove they are right instead of making friends with other collectors and learning from each other, As tbob always says " if only we could have the good 'ol days back."

It seems to me the Board has a diverse and appropriate mix of "pure" card questions/discussions, more general sports discussions (my post about long HRs got quite a few responses, for example), and pointed discussions about controversial issues that come up from time to time such as the Keeler card. People are free to ignore the threads that don't interest them, but I see no reason to limit the other types of discussions as obviously many people including myself find them stimulating. As we take our collecting and our sports passionately, of course there are going to be disagreements, but my take as a relatively new member is that with perhaps an occasional exception and those folks know who they are the "arguments" are not personal/ad hominem in nature, they simply reflect strongly held views on things that matter to people. And I think a valuable service is performed when people here uncover matters such as the Keeler card that raise serious questions, and I for one commend them for doing so.

I also remember not too long ago, Julie getting bashed by people because she WAS posting scans. To me that is just crazy. I would like to see more scans. I for one always enjoyed Julie's scans and any others that people post of items I might not otherwise see.

Very well-said.

Why can't everyone behave perfectly and love everyone else....like I do? (doesn't that make you want to retch?)

The complaints about Julie's scan postings were obviously in reference to distracting scans totally unrelated to the thread topic.

In an effort to gain more knowledge, what do you mean when you say it is the "overprint?"

Thanks,

the T213 seies 3 cards were printed in Louisiana...they were produced with a Factory 3 listing at the bottom of the card. Some of the cards were "overprinted" with a black bar and changed to factory 8.

I agree with Leon. I just scanned the 169 threads and counting related to the Keeler cabinet and although I don't contribute to this board much, I am always full of opinions. Many I keep to myself. But I think it is time for some of the regular posters to take a break. This also includes the Cobb decal bat thread, which gave me a headache and forced me to have my afternoon beer a little earlier today. Doesn't everybody have other things to do than live on this website? It is a useful tool for disseminating information about vintage memorabilia and there is nothing wrong with playing hobby cop and exposing hobby frauds for what they are. But too much of anything is not good. I say everybody take a deep breath, take a break, and get the board back to discussions of vintage material that help educate the fellow collector. All this invective is bad for everybody; you're going to take years off your life. That's just one man's opinion, for what it's worth. Happy holidays to you all.

And as a postscript- Leon, keep posting those great photos of rare vintage cards. I think they have a calming, even hypnotic effect on the board. Everytime you post a photo, everyone seems to calm down. I think you should become the board therapist; whenever the thread is too long or too volatile, just post a few rare backs and everyone will relax, perhaps even find themselves drifting into a deep and relaxing sleep. It takes their minds off all of their other problems.

Ya know...people can't simply IGNORE posts. We're not mind readers.
First, I would open the post and begin reading to see what the post says. Then I might choose to ignore it. But, the titles of miserable banter posts don't carry a disclaimer.

I feel I've sent in nicer ones, but very happy with my first "6".

Have a safe and happy holidays everyone, Keith

Ya had to mention that .
Like I said Tom, I feel I've sent in better cards condition wise. Its a water stain...theres also a faint stain in the upper left hand corner.

Heres another one I felt was undeserving.

but is that paper loss at top center of that T3?

Just to point out PSA's inconsistencies. The Brown definitely deserves a '5'. BOTH are beautiful. I got to about 30-35 of them (T3/T9) before I sold them all.............

This board isn't a neat little book with a perfectly thought-out table of contents and index. Most of the people who contribute aren't writers, most know far less than others (they especially know less than experienced hobbyists like Barry) about the hobby, some have poor communication skills and/or hot tempers. And on top of all of that, most don't even agree on what subjects should be allowed on this board - some won't even tolerate ANY of the exposes of late, others want to talk politics and religion, and still others just like to talk and don't know much about anything. (I possess many of the traits in question, some of which I'm not proud of). When I get sick of the rambling arguments, I stop opening the thread in question. When I get sick of the board in general, I go away for a while - I highly recommend both techniques. BTW - I find the Keeler discussion disgusting as well, but I doubt it's for the same reasons as the four of you. I have much more tolerance for "heated discussions", but very low tolerance for ignorance and lies. But that's what makes a horse race.

Things will go overboard at times because the board is well-used. It's better than the alternative, where we never fight, and rarely even post: http://www.network54.com/Forum/273838>

Robert - if you started reading a poorly-written book, and found it offensive, wouldn't you close it and not re-open it?

about vintage scans, (very PLENTIFUL!) of cards and photos. (The "sleeping Mickey" is a recent exception--and referred only to the pennant race and WS, anyway!)I remember a couple of phrases in particular, "the way she clogs up threads with her scans" and "she should have a special site where she can post her own scans to her heart's content". There was also a HUGE stink about posts of Japanerse cards as a memorial to Hiroshima which no Japanese ever found anything but beautiful....
************************************************** *********

A few months ago, I met Bill Cornell at the Berkeley Public Library; we both brought cards. He didn't bring as many as I did, but one which I LOVED was his T-222 Alexander. All the Alexanders I'd ever seen were funny-looking middle aged men (I know there are others). It was absolutely perfect. Of course I didnt' ask if it was for sale; i just admired it. A Couple of dayts later in the chatroom, he sent me a private message that one was for sale on ebay, and I won it.

It wasn't cheap (even with the little corner missing), but I love it...

It was scans like the above that you guys bitched and BITCHED about!

And I'm NOT talking about anything I might have said that was too political, or personal, or anything--words that got zapped. I'm talking about BEAUITIFUL PICTURES!

I enjoy seeing the pictures that Julie posts. I actually enjoy seeing all the pictures. Most of the cards that people put up are great cards that I wish I had in my collection. It is good to know that these cards reside in someones collection that really do appreciate them the way that they deserve. I wish people would post more pictures about the recent finds and the stories behind them. I realize that not everyone enjoys sharing their "hobby" finds, but for someone like me it is great to hear them. I would post my own but I doubt many people on this board would be interesting in looking at my new t206 bender portrait that I picked up on Ebay - but you never know

You know I stay up all night sometimes thinking of ways to antagonize you - it gains me SO much...helps me sell you cards, keeps you as a friend, etc., etc. Do you like my new handle? I might change it on ebay if it's not taken already.

I'll stick by my previous suggestion that Julie create a web-site - her wit, creativity, and hobby experience/knowledge would make for a very interesting web-site. Julie, before you read something in this that wasn't intended - I'M SERIOUS <== 9 out of 10 board members endorse the TRUTH of Scott's statement.

(edited to correct typos...and then again for same reason)

of Scott's statement. " Aside from being self-serving, it's still a lie. The scans you all objected to-and of course it wasn't ALL of you, by any means--were beautiful vintage cards.

Again I am NOT referring to statements by me and other "bleeding-heart" liberals and radicals that probably don't belong on a vinarge baseball Forum in any way, but that we just can't--completely controll (Gulp).

I'm talking about getting chewed out--and once, an administrator was FORCED to remove some scans because of the VOLUME of complaints!--ridiculed, and generally treated like a rabid dog for posting a lot of gorgeous scans, and FOR NO OTHER REASON! You all SHOULD know who you are, but I see from the previous posts that at least one of you (whom I pictured after his posts as some sort of wild animal with fangs!) has forgotten...

Could it possibly be that I posted too many scans? Nah...

I wish you weren't so mad at me, but to show I still like you, here's a picture of me and my friends that I had made just for you: from left to right, standing in front of our collection of giant Old Judge baseball cards are - my dog Angie, Mr. Bill (yes, THE Mr. Bill), my girlfriend who is a squirrel (but a very witty one) and myself (I wore my special shirt with an "S" so you could tell it was me, Scott ). So before you get upset with me in the future for not being sensitive enough, keep in mind that I have blue skin and a play dough complexion - I'm afraid if I try to adjust my eyebrows so that I look happier, they might fall off.

I remember it the way Julie remembers it. I guess it sticks in my mind because at the time I really thought people were bashing her beyond belief. Maybe I am just stupid, but I couldn't understand all the hate. Seems like there are more things to worry about than Julie posting scans of items from her collection.

Yes Chris,i dont think anyone was worrying about her posts, and as i and everyone else remembers it,it was more that the posts were off subject alot of the time.No one complains when old judge photos show up in threads about the player on the card or a thread about old judge cards. It was more that every one of her posts had a scan and that most(not all) of them were off subject. It had nothing to do with posting scans that were relevant because theres no reason to complain about that

and she also hasnt done it in a long time and no one was complaining when it wasnt happening(obviously) so she has obviously been letting this bother her the whole time.

This goes for everyone on the board....If scans stay on subject or close to subject no one will complain if you post hundreds of scans but if someone starts a thread about great 1950s pitchers and photos of t206s and old judges show up then you might have people who will say something. Its all common sense

it's a "rant." Please see Chris's post (#7) in the thread. That's the way it was. PERIOD!!!

You just "shoveled something on top of the thing" by saying "of course we only opjected to Julie'
s scans when they were completely irrelevant to the thread, or the Forum..etc."

Nobody asked you to DO anything.

The posts were not disapproving, they were vicious, hate-filled, derrogatory...

I don't see how ANY vintage scan can be
off the subject of vintage scans!

FOR INSTANCE, I haven't picked up a new Cobb in a year and a half, but this 1923 postcard came in the mail today:

It's a Japanese art-stamp postcard, 1923, from a multi-sport tournament held there that year. Japan was the hub of study for wstern art among Asians who couldn't afford to travel to Eurpoe or America to study western perspectvie, western focus, abstract expressionism, etc. So The western influence in this painting isn't surprising!

Default Getting Back to the basics?

Posted By: John

Thanks for the many of you who posted pictures. The cards are amazing. John you just keep rubbing salt in that open missing Magie wound don’t you!

Some of you guys are missing my point not unlike the point Chris made. I had a post not to long ago called “So what’s your story?” many of you told your stories on how you began collecting and what you love about it. What I find funny is we can get threads, which can beat a dead horse to the tune of several 100 posts, but we can only scrape together a hand full of guys who want to tell how they started collecting.

This is the Network 54 Vintage Baseball Card Forum. I would say in my opinion that the majority of the posts have some background regarding vintage material but bring very little to the table.

You’re right this is a board used for educational purposes. Many of the board members here are true experts in their own rights and I stress this many are just not. It’s amazing to me how many times I have read through a post and had a hard time deciphering between fact and pure fiction, and I’ve been collecting for over 20yrs. Your also right you can skip threads, but when you have to read 100 snappy slam posts with little or nothing to due with the thread just to get an idea of the posts topic. I think that’s bad for all the members.

This is a perfect example I made a point and asked in a not so direct way to share some stories and photos with the rest of us. Already it’s starting to go a little off topic and ramble. When you guys beat each other up not pointing any fingers it has to scare off potential posters with opinions, questions, stories and photos. I’m sure there are many lurkers here who would love to chime in but see the un-friendly waters and decide not to swim.

Getting back to the basics wasn’t saying walk away from heated discussions I’ve been involved in those as well. It was more lets not forget our roots and some of the fun stuff like pictures and stories, that’s a safe topic where everyone can participate.

Once again thanks for the pictures. You guys are pulling ot all the stops wow!
