My understanding is that card lots aren’t eligible for the authentication program. Some have proposed deliberately adding a worthless junk era wax card to a high value card as a workaround to the authentication program.

Correct; only card singles are permitted to go through the authentication process.

I've been looking at that one for a while. The fact that he is dodging authentication by adding worthless crap to the lot is a big red flag for me. That set is so widely counterfeited that it makes any raw card purchases suspect. He is asking for high retail for the condition, and I am disinclined to take a risk when eBay has a free authenticity program available.

If lots and team sets are looked at sideways for 'dodging authentication' (10 other Tip Top Braves, most of a team set, is not throwing in a random 1988 Donruss), I love it. I'm about to score lots on the cheap. Let's juice this narrative.

Always, no, but when there is one big card with known counterfeits and the seller is asking top dollar for the lot, and avoiding authenticity checking, then yes, I look at it suspiciously. If the cards were up for auction starting at $50, I'd be inclined to go after it some, take the risk. But at that price, no.

Default Adam's post makes nervous

I just pulled the trigger on a tip top shortprint offered on Amazon for a decent price (if it turns out to be authentic). I'll rely on their no hassle return policy if it turns out to be fake. I'll drop a link and see what people think. My first time buying vintage off of Amazon.

https://a.co/d/9nkYyGe

I asked about those spots and received this in reply:

"Pete,
I have been out on the road all day, so this is the first time I have had a chance to answer you.
first off, when you get the card you will not see any of that, it is an issue I have sometimes with the scanner.
second, I have been on amazon since 2012, I think I was the first dealer they approached because of the database we have, been on ebay since 1998 and have had my site up since 1995, probably the first online dealer.
No need to get nervous about this $49 card. If you dont like it you can send it back.
We believe it is an original, I am aware of reprints from that year and we have received them in the past.
We will not sell them if we catch them, so I would be surprised if that card is not authentic."

Default Fritz Ostermueller

I have been collecting this set for 10 years. The Fritz Ostermueller card you purchased from Amazon looks legit to me. Great find!

Default Spahn Card...

The Spahn card looks legit to me (I own two copies) just fairly beat up.
