"Jap" Barbeau
Quote:
Here's William Joseph "Jap" Barbeau. Was in the majors in 1909 and part of 1910. Went on to have a long minor-league career. I couldn't find any information on his nickname. When I searched his name, the results were for Cannonball Run and John Carpenter movies...

Ollie Pickering
I think I'm supposed to wait for a few more hours before I post this one, I just made a deal for it an hour ago, and don't even know if the back is decent. Pickering played for my hometown team in 1892, the Houston Mudcats. Supposedly, his 7 blooper singles in a row helped coin the phrase, "Texas Leaguer". Also, first player to bat in the American League when he played for the Cleveland Blues. Back run in order.

Ed Cicotte was a knuckleball specialist who played his minor league ball in Augusta GA & had a teammate named Ty Cobb.
In 1917, he led the league in Wins (28) ERA (1.53) Innings (346.2) & WHIP (.912) Of course, he is most famous for being permanently banned from baseball for his role in the 1919 "Black Sox" fixing scandal. He was the first of the eight players to confess, but later retracted the confession & was acquitted at trial. Nevertheless, his ban stood and he never played professional baseball again. |

Ed Reulbach
A very underrated Pitcher, Ed Reulbach had a great career from 1905 - 1917. His W-L record was 182-106, with an ERA = 2.28.
His claim to fame occurred on September 26, 1908 when he won both ends of a doubleheader pitching shutouts in both games. I think this is a record that still stands. TED Z T206 Reference . |

Jake Stahl and Charles "Heinie" Wagner
I've included these two guys in the same post because their unique perspective on the leadership of their 1912 Boston AL team.
SABR description quote: "Jake Stahl managed the team and also played first base, but Heinie Wagner was the Red Sox captain. What manager Stahl said before the game was law, but once the game started, and Jake was playing at 1st base, Wagner took over control on the field, and the manager became just another player who took orders from Wagner over at shortstop.". Jake Stahl's confidence in Wagner's leadership abilities paid off....Boston won the AL Pennant in 1912 and the World Series. Manager / player --------------------- Captain TED Z T206 Reference . Kaiser Wilhelm (hands at chest)
Kaiser Wilhelm started pitching for Pittsburgh in 1903. Then Boston (NL) in 1904 - 1905. Brooklyn 1908 - 1910.
On Sept 20, 1910 he was sold to Rochester (Eastern League). I note this because his Batting pose card is very difficult to find with the AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 and the UZIT backs which were printed and issued in late 1910 (or early 1911). The AB 460 card shown here is only the 2nd one known. This card took me many years to find. TED Z T206 Reference . |
