Default What type of a collector are you?

Posted By: identify7

My collection comprises several facets commonly viewed as a primary collecting focus. I do not think that this approach is unusual. I bet lots of you use multiple approaches to collecting. What percent of your collection falls into each catagory shown below (ie. to be a set collector, your objective does not have to be the entire set, heck t206 collectors don't typically strive for that, nor do OJ collectors, etc.).

For me: (% of total dollar value)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Set Collector - 20
"Type Card" Collector - 25
Collect Certain Players (multiple cards of the same player) - 5
Collect Cards of Players from Specific Teams or Regions - 5
Investing/Buying to Resell - 0
Collect HOFers - 5
Collect Certain Players For Reasons Other Than HOF - 35
Collect a Certain Genre of Cards Only (ie...only Caramels) - 0
Hoarding - You collect as much of the same thing as possible - 5
Other - 0

I am a set collector and like to focus on one set at a time. I also buy cards that catch my eye or I think are good investments while collecting a certain set. So I would say 75% of my spending or value is in set collecting and 25% is in investing.

I'm the same kind of collector as Joe. One set at a time and always looking for a good investment or eye catcher.

I'm working on the impossible dream, one card of each major leaguer that appeared on card as a major leaguer from 1908-45. Within that I try to get as many type cards as possible and am also putting together a Delong set as that is one of my all time favorite sets.

Jay

I've just reached Upper Lower Class. I am now officially a babe magnet for poor chicks.

Right now, I'm a sick collector

For me, it's purely player specific.

Currently:

Team collector - Players from Detroit teams 90%
Cards showing female players (actual or posed for advertising) 5%
Odds and ends that don't meet my collecting goals but I haven't ditched yet 5%

Planned:

Detroit players - 70%
Female players - 14%
Minor league and/or college players that at some point played on a professional Detroit team - 14%
Just in case, mistakes, had to take 'em to get something else, etc - 2%

Change in proportion to be accomplished by increasing presence of female and minor/college cards in collection, not by backing off on Detroit players.

Looking for a Detroit or future Detroit player from all sets issued up until, probably, 1920. Those that I can afford anyway. For sets with no Detroit players will grab a card of a player that played for Detroit at some time.

I don't know what the heck kind of collector this is called.

Joann

Currently, I am working on a HOF rookie set (tough and expensive) and HOF T206 and 1951 bowman sets (less tough, but still expensive). I am also a fan of greg maddux and hank aaron...so, any card with them on it that i find appealing...i look into. other than that, i stay away because my wallet isnt so fat. i had a lou gehrig 1933 goudey...bought it out of impulse a few months ago...realized that, hey, maybe i can use this money to buy some groceries...finally sold it a few weeks ago.

These days, money is an extremely important variable (and filter) on what a collector can focus on.

Focus is on completing the t205 set. Tires are stuck in the mud with the t206s (stopped at 494) There is no time frame for completion although I wish I had bought more high dollar hofs 3 years ago.

My collection is all over the place due to varied interests. To quote the chant from *Full Metal Jacket*, "...there are many like it, but this one is mine!"

This was a neat little exercise to do!

Sets
T206’s
457 cards
(47.8% of my collection)
(65.6% of the value)

1955 Topps All American Football
88 cards
(9.2% of my collection)
(12.5% of the value)

Modern HOG GU & Autograph “Gadget” cards
225 cards
(23.5% of my collection)
(13.2% of the value)

Local Modern Players on teams I like
(Jared Wells – Padres & Gilbert Gardner – Colts)
44 cards
(4.6% of my collection)
(0.73% of the value)

“Vintage” San Diego Padres & Indiana Pacers
(Nate Colbert, Randy Jones, Tony Gywnn, & Reggie Miller)
143 cards
(14.9.% of my collection)
(8% of the value)
