Default Heritage Auction - Mark Americans circa 1922 barnstorming cabinet photograph

Posted By: Mark Fimoff

Heritage auctions is currently featuring a team photo of the 1922 Mark Americans. They claim it includes Lefty Williams, Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte. They even cropped out the respective faces and compared them to the real guys. A critical look should tell anyone that these ID's are bogus - they don't look even similar and of course the ears clearly don't match. These are worse than that supposed 1900 StL team composite on ebay a couple of months ago.

Interesting how these things keep coming around. This photo was discussed here years ago.

They will tell you what "convinced" them. Certainly to this untrained eye, the three White Sox seem to be different players and the two photos at the bottom seem to be the same player and close to the same photo.

At least there was no "young" Hans Wagner or Chief Bender involved.

I remember when a board member sold this photo on ebay about four years ago...I was convinced that it was indeed Joe Jackson, but that was before I knew much about facial recognition. There is no way in the world that photo includes any of those guys claimed by heritage. Nothing could be found in the Zanesville newspapers of the time either as to any of those guys playing for the Marks team.

edited to add: The Jimmy Walsh photo is the exact same image.

So - is Heritage going to contact the person who "won" the Walsh photo and offer him a refund?

You can be convinced of the legitmacy of an item, and at the same time be in error.

Barry - I completely agree. If you presume "honesty" on the part of Heritage - I have no specific evidence otherwise, then the issue is one of "competence".

(edited for typo)

BTW - minimim bid is $1000, est final price $4000 - $6000. Can anyone be that stupid?
