Default Selling an Inherited Collection

Greetings all. I’m not a sports card collector but I recently inherited a large collection of mostly baseball and football cards. Some older, some newer, some complete sets, etc. Not a ton of cards, but enough to fill a couple standard size cardboard file storage boxes. Mostly post 1980 baseball and football cards but some older baseball cards. Fortunately, I had the chance to discuss options with the former owner before their passing earlier this year and we agreed selling the collection makes the most sense. The only request the owner had was that I do my research and get the best value I can.

I’ve spent the last few days researching options online and what I think would be best is for me to hire a consignment service that would sell the cards for me. I don’t have the knowledge or the time to list everything on eBay and I don’t live by any dealers or a large city where I might have nearby options. I think hiring the services of someone that does this professionally would be best.

My question to the group is what consignment services have the best reputation in the industry? I see a lot of mixed reviews of both PWCC and Probstein123?? Are either of these reputable and if you were in my shoes what services would you be considering?

I would like a one-stop-shop where I would ship the entire collection to a service and have them take it from there and sell it off as they see best fit. I’m in no hurry for the money. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

A lot of individuals on this site like Greg Morris Cards, and they say the hassle is low. Good luck.

To get the most money on PWCC your cards need to be graded, otherwise they charge a higher commission.

What area do you live in? If it's mostly 80s and 90s, it's mostly crap that will get rejected from online consignment firms. Your best bet would be to itemize it, and have a local take a look at it for any "hidden gems" oddball or rare inserts/errors that have a lot more value than you'd expect.
Can you take some pictures or post a listing of what you have, so we can weigh in on what is actually worth selling?

I prefer to use COMC for cards between $2-50 each, because they do the work scanning the cards in, I price them, and then when they sell, they mail them across the world. They also list their cards on eBay so they take advantage of the millions of buyers through eBay.

PWCC is actively being investigated by the FBI for intentionally committing fraud against the sportscard community. I would not recommend them. Probstein has some haters, but they're more incompetent usually than intentionally evil. But for the stuff you're talking about, we'd have to have a much better idea of what you're talking about to see if it's worth sending anywhere at all.

I haven't sold cards through any of these sellers/consigners but I have had a great experience with them multiple times as a buyer. All are Ebay sellers and they sell raw cards (ungraded).

Greg Morris Cards (who was mentioned above)
COMC
Burbank Sports Cards

COMC and Burbank both sell new cards as well as vintage cards. Great folks at all three.

Thanks for the replies. When I find some time I'll go through everything and try to come up with a list to give everybody a better idea of what all is there. Stay tuned. Thank you.

I had a chance to go through everything over the weekend and put together the attached 2 page list. Image file 1 is page 1 and Image file 2 is page 2.

Any additional advice based on this inventory listing would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

These are the ones you should be looking for:
https://www.psacard.com/psasetregist...mposition/1514

https://www.psacard.com/psasetregist...omposition/260

https://www.psacard.com/psasetregist...position/12875

Aside from those, you're looking for 1984 Don Mattingly RCs, 1990 Topps partial blackless errors ( https://forums.collectors.com/discus...n-to-my-theory ), and some other oddball errors or inserts. Again, you probably want someone from either here or Blowout to meet up with you and scan your collection. Just ranking them by sets isn't really that informative since condition is so important to overall value. And an experienced person will know what to look for in your piles of mostly junk.

1981 topps is joe montana's rookie year. that's a great card if it's in good shape. 1984 is elway/marino rookies, also great cards. 1986 if you have jerry rice rookie is a nice score.

for hockey, topps is always the ugly sister next to OPC. but anything bobby orr or any other HOF are worthwhile cards (especially rookies like dryden or other canadiens).

Are any of these boxes? I'm looking to buy a dozen boxes of late 80s baseball by summertime.

Thank you very much!! That at least gives me a starting point to start looking for specific cards.

Thanks for the information. I know there's at least 2 of those 1981 Topps Joe Montanas. That other reply in this thread listed some links with specific cards by player that I can look for. That's the hard part, now knowing exactly what I should be looking for.

Don't forget Gretzky and Lemieux from 1979 onwards. Some of those can go for nice money too. Same with Jordan, Kobe, Bird, Magic and a few other basketball cards.
