Default 1977 Topps B'Ball - white/gray

A few years back I got myself a complete set of 77/78 Topps, and all but 3 of the cards were white. I've since been looking for a set of gray backs. I once read where they were produced in roughly equal amounts and that neither commanded a premium, but after a few years of searching, I can say that the gray backs certainly seem scarcer, especially when looking for a complete set of them.

Can someone illuminate me on what is know about the production of the 77/78 set and why we have this variation, and whether as I seem to be encountering the grays are harder to find?
Thanks!

I heard that too but my experience is that the gray backs are much much harder to find.

The gray backs are substantially more rare. Oddly, there hasn't been any premium given to them, though you could probably demand a bit more for the stars. You won't find them segregated by psa either.

I know there are people who are down to needing just a few to complete midgrade sets of the grays so it is possible. You will find small lots of them on ebay if you save the search.
