Default McQuaid Umpire

In the latest Goodwin auction a copy of the McQuaid umpire card sold for over $17,000. While certainly a strong price, it reflects the rarity of finding an image of McQuaid. What some collectors don't realize is that McQuaid is also pictured in a two player card, accompanied by the identified McGarr, in the Old Judge set. This card, although not common, can be had for a fraction of the cost of the individual McQuaid card. I have provided an image from the past REA auction where one Old Judge lot had just this card.

McQuaid's 1888 card (Fb) and 1889 re-issue (Fc) are certainly scarce. The example in Goodwin is the first time I've seen the 1889 version. A minor correction to the Old Judge book should be made in that the 1888 version (shown in book) is "Umpire (AA)" while the 1889 card was issued after McQuaid moved to the NL. So the Fc card is a "league change" of sorts and the book should state "Umpire (NL)". Neat card.

I thought some of the n173's and n172's went for good bargains in the last Goodwin auction. I was locked in to only 2 that I ended up losing. I should have spread my bids across earlier.

If y'all ever make a paperback second edition of the book, I would buy a copy.
