Default Anyone collect lunchboxes?

In addition to baseball cards/memorabilia, I've been working on a vintage lunchbox collection. Anyone else here with an interest in lunchboxes?

I saw you post that in another thread earlier. I do not collect, but I still have my 1978(ish) Star Wars. My sister has her 1978 (ish) Muppets. I forget which show I was watching, either American Pickers or Strange Inheritance, and apparently they wound up at the largest collection of lunchboxes in the world. Cool hobby...thanks for sharing...

I just dug out my lunch box from first grade, the only year I carried lunch to school. I believe it's from 1962 or 1963. It has a space capsule on one side and a rocket taking off on the other side. Didn't they call it the John Glenn lunch box? I also have the thermos. Sorry no pics. It's the style of this one
from ebay only mine is in much better condition.

The"Orbit" lunchbox is pretty cool.

As I understand it, the images of the Mercury manned space flight module and the Atlas used on the lunchbox were lifted from National Geographic, and Thermos received a cease and desist and stopped production.

Love the star wars figures around the lunchbox. Nice display.

Memories of school cafeterias of 55 years ago or more are a little vague, but a new lunchbox every year or two was a big thing
when we were kids, as it was a strong statement of one's tastes and persona. We recall having Bonanza, The Rifleman,
The Wild Wild West, 007
, and Supercar at one point or another. Sadly, all were eventually discarded, although
mum dast not touch our baseball cards.

The only one we own now is of course this 1968-69 number, bought a few years back at a flea market:

Good stuff. I remember the trip to get my back to school supplies every year. The lunchbox was the most important decision. Social status was at stake.

That Playball LB is from 1969. The 1968 version has a MLB Logo. I recently sold my copy of it. I still have the magnetic playing pieces and the spinner that came with it. I'm now waiting to get a copy in better condition.

Believe it or not, I picked up the Wild Wild West in an antique fair in southern England a few years ago. It's what got me into collecting lunchboxes.

Hi Gary, thanks for the date info -- we've seen both versions, but had never run across anything that told us
which was the 1968 edition and which the '69.
The photos in our post are obviously from an eBay auction, just because we were too lazy to photograph our own,
but ours is in almost identical condition -- although we're minus the thermos, the magnets, and the all-important spinner.
Let us know if you're interested in selling those parts!

Hey Butch

Did we always have to carry two lunch boxes each day?

We just had one apiece, Frank, but we can't speak for you -- were you that hungry?

Similarly, we can be confused separately, or have a joke go over all our heads simultaneously...

I don’t think anyone collects my lunch carrier from childhood.

edjs -- we had that one too!

orioles70 -- thanks for the photos! We've seen the thermos with both the red cap/cup and a white cap/cup,
but that's the first we've seen the game spinner.

Doctor Frank -- we're the same three idiots who run the Baseball Games website and forum linked in our sig below,
where we remember you having signed in and posted in the distant past. Unfortunately, Butch signed us in here eons ago
using his own screen name as what he thought was a placeholder, only to later find we can't really change it to
something like a more explanatory "ThreeBaseballGamesIdiots" (and early on it woulda been "FourBaseballGamesIdiots"
anyway, but one of us already passed on and we'd have wanted to change it yet again).

Lunchboxes (like cards) can have loads of variations. No only were there both red and cream cups. The bottom of the thermos could be painted or polished chrome.
