Default Show off your Mascots

Whether it be cards, postcards, pictures, whatever. One thing Baseball should have retained from the early days was the mascot. They come in many forms.Kids,dogs,goats,etc.Here is my favorite mascot and my favorite card all in one.

I wonder what happened to the kid when he grew up?

Default Favorite Mascot

My favorite mascot is from this SALLY Champs Chattanooga team PC from 1909. Although the Post card identifies the mascot as "sitting" I think it is obvious that is not the case - The Kelly mascot boy is a little taller for sure and doesn't have a mustache.

Default Willie Breslin

Was the NY mascot on the card with Ewing. They made a separate card of him like they did with the Chicago mascot.

This is the first time I've seen that image, the image Willie Hahm's N172 is based on. Very neat indeed.

Here is what I believe may be the Detroit Wolverines International Association mascot of 1889/90. More research required to support or refute this belief.

Fun thread.

Here's the 1912 Western Tri State League Boise (ID) Irrigators and La Grande (OR) Pippins, and a close up of the mascots.

Carl Mays is in the middle row, second from left on the Boise side.

I think it is quite ironic that segregated baseball teams had black mascots.

What function did those kid mascots serve in comparison to today's costumed mascots like Mr. Met and the Phillie Phanatic?

In many cases, that was the point. I read Jerrold Casway's excellent book "Ed Delahanty in the Emerald Age of Baseball" a few months ago. In the book, Casway wrote that the Phillies of the 1890s had a series of African-American mascots that traveled with the team. Players on the team viewed it as the mascot's duty to perform various degrading tasks such as shining the players' shoes or carrying their bags. In return, the players would often give the mascot a few dollars or some leftover food.

Casway wrote that it was not unusual for the team to abandon their mascot during a losing streak and simply find another one in an effort to change the team's luck.
