Default Your "White Whale" .... and will you land it ??

"From beneath his slouched hat Ahab dropped a tear into the sea; nor did all the pacific contain such wealth as that one wee drop." – Herman Melville, Moby Dick

For the past 12+ years I have been working on a "mid-tier back" T206 set (Sov.350 - P42, plus 2 PBs ) ........ I sit at 519 .....

My "White Whale" --- Tolstoi Cross

It is a "cross to bare" as I don't see it happening ......

But, as they say --- "Hope Springs Eternal" .........

......... and yours ?????

Still, Fun, fun, Scott

I currently have no white whale. It was the last t216 dots miller i needed for my run. I thought it could take a lifetime to find.

One day commercial fisherman mac wubben emailed me with my whale. Of course I had to reimburse him for operating costs!!!!

I'd surmise your whale is also other's whale!!!!

Any excuse to show dots!!!!

D303 Mothers' Bread Bressler and Lajoie

I think Bressler exists, but I'm not sure about Lajoie.

If we're talking collecting in general, I don't believe I have one. The cards that I really want in my collection are ones all readily available if you have the financial means to acquire them, which I don't.

I suppose if I were really to choose something, a true white whale if you will it would be the Harrsion Studios Postcard of Josh Gibson. I doubt there even is another copy of this card in existence, and I'm pretty sure the only way I would ever own it would be if I suddenly inherited millions of dollars.

My white whale is the 1887 Kalamazoo Pittsburgh team card, and I won't be getting it unless I decide to sell other cards to buy it. I have other cards on my wantlist that are actually in my price range, which I would get before the Kalamazoo card.

I share this white whale, Seven. But to add something new to the thread, this is up there as well... to pair with my signed 49 Bowman Paige.

I never owned it, but at least I got to authenticate the autograph aspect of it (and the accompanying Jud Wilson, which I'd personally rather own over the Gibson due to his rarity making Gibson's autograph look "common"!).

I hope all your white whales come true

I have had a white whale for the last 10 years or so

And may actually have a chance to get it (my luck having to sell some of my prized cards but it would be worth it)

And those who think they know me it is not the Felix Mendelssohn Joe Jackson on Goldin(although if I had the resources I would make a run for it)

My whale has to currently stay anonymous as I do not want anything or anyone to get in the way.

Hopefully by the September New Picks or October I will be able to share it

Stay tuned

Would love to get a T206 Lavender Cycle back to fill that hole, but they don't come up often. Really, any card I don't have for my Providence set yet is a white whale at this point.

I like how you referred to it as “white whale” and not a grail.

I think many of us have white whales until they are “captured”. Then another one emerges. At least this has been the case w/ me & hobby friends. Strange though as with other hobbies, I obtained a “white whale” in each & was perfectly content every single time . Cards on the other hand…

For me , it’s the t206 Wagner. Zero chance of ever owning one.

I have two main focuses. My WaJo back run and Pop Lloyd.

For WaJo it would be the T215 Pirate WaJo.
My Lloyd would be the 1910 Punch.

The odds of ever owning either are next to zero.

Thanks
Chad

Not really a white whale in my eyes but I’d love to pick up a 51 bowman mantle, lower grade. Probably have to trade for it. I just never owned one.

E210 York Caramel Waite Hoyt would be nice to find.

Maybe not a white whale, because if I do get it, some other card would immediately move to #1 most wanted.

I would like an Old Hoss Radbourne OJ card with clear image some day too.

I just picked up my white whale yesterday! A PSA 9 (OC) 1982 Granny Goose Signature series Rickey Henderson. Finding this in the bag of chips would win you a trip to the World Series! Supposedly only one available, but 14 graded by PSA (don't know about other companies), so I don't know what to make of that. I haven't seen one listed for sale anywhere in forever. So very happy even if there might have been something weird going on.

Mine is a T206 Herzog Boston w/ Uzit back. Took a run at one a few years ago but it went for over $6k and I just couldn’t stomach it. I’m in no rush.

May you all find what you’re looking for!

1973-74 Linnett Portraits #NNO Dave Kingman

I have never even seen an image of this card and honestly am not sure it exists. But I have to assume it does as it's listed by both Becker and TCB.

I have a relatively small “Players from Oklahoma” collection and would really love to get something from Bullet Joe Rogans playing days. But I think my options are pretty limited. Still holding out hope for something besides the 1974 Laughlin set.

Default T206 Reulbach

I’ve been trying for years to complete the tough eleven Sovereign 150 cards that were pulled before the 350 run. The only one I have left is the Reulbach (glove shows). It’s not on the level of most of the whales listed here, but it is an extremely tough card, that just doesn’t show up very often. One of these days…

Cheers,
Geno

Concerning Bullet Rogan, would a Type 1 photo fit your want? Just a thought in attempts to expand the horizons a little bit.

There are a number of cards I would really like to have, some I have owned in the past and some I have only dreamed of, but this one is THE card for me.

This T206 Lenox Johnson was the centerpiece of the original backs line and also the first card, that the rest were built around. I also owned it years before. I’ve been forced to sell it twice in my 45 years of collecting and if I’m ever able to land it again, it will never leave!

I’m only 5ish hours away from it and frequently work close by the card, so at least I know where it is!

Happy collecting or card stalking, whatever you want to call it!
Bob
