Default Is Hughie Jennings the third base coach in this footage?
When I first saw the third base coach at the end of this old clip, I thought of Hughie Jennings. Since the clip looks like it's from the late teens or early 20s, the time period is right. If it is him, I figure it's from the years when he was a coach for the Giants. What do you think?

I received this altered but affordable card in the mail yesterday and it reminded me of the video clip. So I typed in "dead ball" on YouTube and located it. I'm not sure where I first saw it. It might have been in the Ken Burns series ...

But why is he dancing? I realize he is happy because he got a runner to third, but it seems odd, in that "rough and tumble" or "tough guy" era, that he would do that dance. It is showmanship to some degree, but it seems out of character for the times.

He must have done it quite a bit because so many images of him show him in that little jig.

It was his way of psyching up his players psyching out the other team. He used to have a tin whistle that he would blow to distract the pitcher, and during the Tigers 1907-1909 playoff run he was banned from doing it in the post season, although he did do it during the Big Train's first ever start. When Rube Waddell used to start, Jennings used to set wind up toys in the coaching box to distract the supposedly "simple" pitcher. All this made him incredibly popular locally and nationally.
