[QUOTE=Rob D.;735235 My modus operandi has been, for the most part, to buy or trade for things with the intent of keeping them a long time. I know what I enjoy collecting and owning, so there are few instances in which I decide to get rid of something I've acquired.[/QUOTE]

Great comment. As a former collector and now a dealer, I have always tried to follow the philosophy to never buy a card unless I would be comfortable holding it for five years. Whenever I have wavered from that fairly disciplined approach, I have typically regretted my actions. As for buying what's "hot"; I'd rather own what's timeless!

Default Brilliant Point

I think that Peter Spaeth's point about anonymity with grading and auctions is absolutely brilliant and something that never occurred to me in those terms.

This is also true for autographed items and single signed balls with removals - knowing the owner of the item often makes it easier to get a feel for the piece and possibly its history. I suppose there is no way around this with current auctions as consignors naturally want to remain anonymous...

Wow, so we've got two of the four sales covered, the first and last -- but these were the most likely to be legit. What are the odds the other two are real?

Maybe it was Wes who won the card from the Sept 07 auction which would leave one auction unexplained. If not, it would be interesting to know who Wes bought the card from.

I would hate to think JP will need to get 17.5 percent higher just for the consignor to break even on his purchase from two short months ago, but I guess that is how it is ..... unless of course this is a "door #2" situation.

I think there website is in a state of flux. This was sold in December. Lot 49 in the current auction is a Red Man I believe.

Their auction site has 2 different cards, in the same lot, going at the same time. The site is either messed up right now or there are 2 different auctions going on at the same time? I am going with the former...Probably when someone was adding lots something got twisted.....it happens. Unless someone comes up with a better explanation (and they very well might) then that is my guess....and it is a true guess as I can't tell the nature of the issue right now...(except of course the Id's are different?)

The end time (8-8-2009) is incorrect, is the problem, with the one you just showed....but you probably saw that. It can't be closed and open at the same time...

Yes, the one identified as lot 49 ended in December. I am not sure about the lot number but that card sold in December.

Irrespective of the Lot 49 confusion, Lot 246 is the PSA 4 DiMaggio-- the same card that sold in Goodwin two months ago.

Looks to me like it sold in December (Memory Lane, lot #49), again in May at Goodwin AND is back in the current Memory Lane auction (lot #246).

Good call. I wonder why VCP isn't showing the December 08 sale.

Speaking of JP, interesting that all three PSA 9 Red Man Mays cards in his current auction were also in his September 08 auction. Once again, the consignor needs to improve those very strong prices by 17.5 percent just to break even.

I noticed a 1914 Boston Garter Lajoie in the Goodwin booth. I pointed it out to Rob D. He recalled that it had sold in the February Goodwin auction for about $8500 with the juice.

Asking price at the show? $9900, almost exactly 17.5% more.

What recession?

I am told that a U.S. Caramel Jones that just quote unquote sold in Bill's just-ended auction was available on his table at the National. Those danged reneggers.

Damn those reneggers! Memory Lane, Mastro/Legendary, Goodwin...lots of reneggers. How did REA sell $47 million in cards and only have one renegger? Those other fellows must sure be unlucky.
