1985 Topps Collectors' Edition (Tiffany) cards
Do 1985 Topps Tiffany cards have a yellowish tint to them?
I just bought one and it is yellowish. Is that damage or is that how they are? Last edited by JWBlue; 02-03-2019 at 02:26 PM. |

That's kind of how they are. I think the extra gloss may have turned them yellower over time than the regular set cards. So you may have some with little yellow and some with heavier yellow.

I am asking since I am wondering if I could find one that has less yellowing. Last edited by JWBlue; 02-03-2019 at 02:35 PM. |

Never mind; you've posted it on so many different message boards I'm sure you'll get enough answers.

Is it considered bad etiquette to post on more than one forum?
I wasn't aware. I view every forum as having different members. I don't know where I might find the best answers to my question. |

Just kidding. Makes sense to me to get as me to get as many opinions as possible. I have a run of the Tiffany sets and update sets but have never opened the sealed boxes so have no idea if any yellowing is a result of light or occurs in the dark as well.

Apparently it depends on how they are stored. What is weird is it seems all the Clemens that have been graded have tanning. Even the PSA 10. I guess any amount of light turns them. Last edited by JWBlue; 02-03-2019 at 04:26 PM. |

I would recommend you give one forum a chance. If you don't get a satisfactory answer in a week, post to a different one. But as many of us are on all three boards you posted to (or was it even more?), you're just as likely to get the same answers no matter where you post.

The majority of my 85 Tiffanys are white but some yellowed. |

Amazed that PSA will grade these yellowed ones as a 10. Possibly they became discolored while in the holder. |

Well, he shouldn't have posted it on blowout. Sure is getting an education there...

That's weird. Shows 90 replies but there's only one page with 13.

Its not always about him receiving an answer. There are people here who don't post on Blowout or other forums and might want to learn something too. I didn't know that 85 Tiffanys yellowed so easily and I appreciate possibly learning why.

A moderator over at Blowout replied to my thread. This is what he said which makes sense. He does not believe it is sunlight. It is possible being encased causes some sort of reaction. Apparently keeping them in the box somehow prevents the discoloration. Someone is selling a 1985 Tiffany Traded set that has remained in the box for the most part. They are lily-white. |

Since it is the gloss seeping onto the cardboard my guess is that the temperature has something to do with it. Those cards in my previous picture look like the same as they probably did in 1985. Last edited by JWBlue; 02-04-2019 at 07:29 PM. |

I have seen Topps with glosscoat that yellows back into the late 70's. Some are cards I got in packs at the time that have been stored with cards also bought in packs that didn't yellow. (As well as varying degrees of gloss, which I should study at some point, but studying something that's mostly clear isn't easy)

Not a chemist but the yellowing may be due to chemical reactions over time between the cards and the plastic types of graded holders, sleeves and top loaders, not to mention pages...cards in the box may stay white because there is nothing to react to...

IMO "forum shopping" is when someone either doesn't get the answer they want so they ask on another forum, or when someone posts on 10 forums but doesn't participate in the discussion.

Has anyone noticed any "yellowing" on any other Topps Tiffany issues? My 84s and 86s all appear non-yellowed.

I have the '84 Topps Tiffany set and no issues with yellowing, and they reside in a binder. Enjoying this thread btw.

It's called toning.
The N172 and N173 Old Judges weren't originally sepia. |
