Default Most you would spend on a card?

Seeing some outrageous prices on cards. Which got me thinking….

What is the most you would spend on a single card (USD)?

Love to see the net54 community input.

Nothing personal, but I find threads like this off-putting.

I never thought I would spend 5K on a card, then the bar was 10K, then 15K, then 20K. I guess it would depend on cash flow and desire for the card and whether I could budget for it. Not having enough money for the cards you want actually focuses your attention on what is really important to your collection.

I've come close but draw the line at $5k and have yet to exceed that for a single card(I think). My buying habits have changed and I now prefer volume over individual value because it's fun to diversify. It sneaks up on you though and $5k can happen quickly. My avg purchase is ~$350 which is drawn down by the fact that my $750-900 bids have not been good enough lately. Been getting smoked on ebay and a few auctions. The current goal is to leave a hoard of cards for my kids to "find" when I'm gone. Cards along with precious metals, collectibles, art and items collected over my decade and a half of travelling(being shipped to) unique lands all over the globe . I have always loved the stories of finds from dad/grandpa/uncle's closet or attic so why not create one myself.

The '53 Mays has gotten competitive the last 12 months. I've not been looking at anything over vg-ex so I'm sure the high grades are seeing the same.

Let's just say I would have to sell stuff in order to continue buying what I was buying 5 years ago. Back in 2013 when the 86 Fleer Jordan was at 10K, I remember thinking that was insane. Today, there are plenty of collectors with multiple 10K cards like it's nothing. One thing I have noticed is that my collection is getting smaller and smaller because I keep having to sell multiple items in order to purchase that one bigger item because I can't even keep up with the price fluctuations. I'm just glad I didn't really buy during the hype last year and decided to wait it out and stand on the sidelines.

Depends on a number of things. Did I make any large card purchases recently? Does it fit in to a project I have at the moment? Is the value in the same ballpark as the asking price, or will it appreciate to it? My threshold has also changed as I've gotten older; when I was in college, spending more than $100 or so on a card was something I needed to budget for, now it isn't.

Default the most

If a T 206 Wagner was available I think most people would scrape up 10 or 20 thousand at least maybe more..... kind of depends on how good a deal and what card as to how much I would spend. And Im NOT a flipper! Rocky

+1. The continuing insinuation that cards are intrinsically valuable anymore only in proportion to their dollar value just makes this a hobby that continues to climb out of reach for the average Joe.

I will say that since getting back into cards about 7 years ago, the insane prices on some of the things that were on my initial wantlist has been one of the largest single turnoffs for me. I will look at something and think yeah, I could make that happen if I wanted to. But do I really want to? They want how much for that card?

I don't care what anyone spends on a card. It's their business. I'm just hoping we get back to Pre Jan 2021 Numbers, Just give me the 2020 averages and I'll be happy.

Not collecting for the money as they say and I have made many poor decisions if that were the case. That said, I would not like that development.

Me either, I would go down to the Sally and get them a slightly used pair from
the WalMart that someone donated first.

I think I paid like $25-$30 for a rookie Wade Boggs card once. Can't imagine a better card so that is my limit.

No answer is possible: it depends entirely on the ask and the card.

Hey ParkPlace33,

I think I understood the curiosity behind your question. I also understand it not being entertained by all. Fragile community sometimes and why you're getting the snarky replies. You can simply move on if you're not interested in answering, but it cancels out the ability to have the oh so clever comments which are often pretty good entertainment. For me, the amount of money I'm capable of spending vs the amount I'm willing to spend are two entirely different answers and I would not respond to the first. But the second is fair game and why I shared my budget mentality. The question has been posed before with different language so you can likely search for "budget" and find some of those threads.

Anyway, I don't think you're a horrible human being or intentionally digging into my finances. No lives will be lost on here today and no significant impact to anything in the world will come of any statement made. It's a baseball card forum - have fun.

Thanks, appreciate it and the information!

My curiosity stemmed from crazy recent sale prices and if those members were on Net54.

Most I would spend on a card - could be a little, could be a lot, depends on the price and perceived value. I just spent $1.k on a 1999 Charizard PSA 9 - maybe I have lost my marbles.

I am actively buying and selling vintage sports cards graded and raw. Feedback as a buyer: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=297262

I am accepting select private consignments of quality vintage cards (raw or graded) and collecting "want" lists for higher end ($1K+) vintage cards.

Asking your question in a vacuum is unanswerable. There are too many variables to consider. For example, would I spend $50,000.00 on a baseball card for my personal collection? Absolutely not. However, would I spend $50,000.00 on a card that I could immediately flip for a nice profit? Absolutely. Everything is relative.

Asking what is the most you have ever spent (instead of what is the most you would spend) on a baseball card for your personal collection is the better question. There are less variables with this question. However, it is a personal financial question, and you many not get a lot of responses.

The most I have spent was $4800. I have cards that now are worth more than that but they are NFS.

That's sort of a question with no answer.
How much would I spend on a card?
For the right card? And with unlimited budget? Who knows?

The more important questions are
How much could I spend on a card?

That's variable, and a much smaller number than I'd like.

Or
How much would/could I spend on any particular card.

Which is even more variable.

I also happen to be more than a bit cheap at times. Currently I'm wrestling with vg common T206s being almost 100. When I started that would have got me a Goudey Ruth. OR 10 T206 Hofers.
