I hope that there will be some sort of resolution to this. Sorry you're going through this experience. As someone who has also gone through it, in the past, it sucks.

I am pretty shocked both how prevalent and brazen USPS employees are. There was really no way to target this

Likely was on one of the various commercial airlines during the overnight, the USPS does not fly it's own packages. So handled by a few others as well.

Talk to your local Postmaster they can provide more detailed tracking info, however once the contents of the overnight from one destination to another were placed in the larger postal bin, it would only show details for the bulk not each piece of mail until arriving at the local sorting facility for delivery.

Report to the USPS Postal Inspector, that's what they do.

NY to NJ to Md I doubt it was on an airline.

Members have posted stories like this before. At least once I can recall a member posting that a package mysteriously showed up right after a claim was filed. They do investigate.

How well do you know the person that received it and why did they sign for an empty package?

I have never in my life opened up a package before signing for it. I assume the recipient just took it on faith that what he purchased would be inside.

For what it's worth, I think a USPS employee is far more likely than an airline employee. I work for a major airline, and always see those USPS boxes going up the belt loader when I walk around the plane. They aren't necessarily super secure, but they are wrapped and the employees would have to open them, and some how wrap them again, to do that. And the fact is that those baggage carts pull up to the plane, the two guys on the ramp load them on the belt, and the guy in the cargo compartment stacks them inside, as fast as they can get it done. Again, not impossible, but I don't really see that being where the problem is. I guess all three of them could be in cahoots and snag a box of mail, but I think it's more likely to happen elsewhere in the transit.

Pat

I will not say who it is.... But the person in question is known... and not a question in this equation

The package was a flat rate overnight bag/envelope... it had a cardboard box in it that was packing tape completely shut with one of the ebay authentic holders in side with both cards... the envelope was sliced open... the box was sliced open.... the ebay holder with cards were removed.... the box was put back in empty, and the bad was taped shut again

so to the recipient... nothing seemed out of place

and for the USPS this is a perfect scamp because they say they can neither guarantee I packed the cards or the recipient didnt remove them after reviving them... So much for filing a claim

Me either Peter but if I'm signing for a package that has no weight to it I would.

I doubt I would have noticed, not like a couple of slabs weigh much.

Default Tracking 2 stolen cards

Was package insured? I typically pack stuff so any tampering would be evident upon sight…

I've had a similar situation happen (dropped off with USPS clerk, package opened, items stolen, package resealed and delivered). I filed a claim - I think you have to have receipts - and have never received payment for anything so fast in my life. They don't like this happening so should have an incentive to make it right as quickly as possible

A few years ago I shipped a PSA graded card in a bubble mailer to a member here. When he received it the bubble mailer had been cut open and the card was gone. At the time It was a $60 or so card. I didn't insure it. I talked to my local postmaster. He agreed that it was probably stolen by a postal employee but he wouldn't do anything about it. Several months later the card showed up in an online auction as part of a set they were selling. The set was mostly raw with a few PSA graded cards. I called the auction house but they wouldn't do anything since I didn't do a police report. The card is still in my PSA registry. No one has tried to register it. My guess is that it was removed from the slab.

Default Insurance claim

Either party can file a insurance claim, I might recommend the receiving party file the claim-- unless the receiver was a friend etc. If the Postal Insurance should deny the claim, your private insurance carrier will help cover your loss--

Doesn't sound like it. I will venture that OP will definitely be going that route in the future.

I had a package stolen when I dropped it off directly at the PO and had tracking info. The cell company initially charged me and then reversed the charge when I provided proof of tracking. Apparently somewhere along the way a non-USPS firm was involved and the package was stolen at that point. I filed a report at USPS and included tracking info.

End result was no loss to me as I had proof of shipment. I never heard the result from that point on.
