Baseball sheet music
Greetings,
I picked this up at a flea market yesterday just becasue it was cheap and I thought it was neat. In the past I purchased a small pile of sheet music at a yard sale and have actually framed a few of the more humorous themes (not baseball, more like saloons) and hung them in my house. This is my first baseball pick-up and am curious as to their value in case I ever stumble upon more in the future. I know it can't be much because A) most pieces I've seen like this one aren't in great shape and B) they printed a lot of this stuff back in the day. While doing some research I noticed the Library of Congress has a nice collection of baseball sheet music on line. I'm sure some of the collectors here have impressive collections of sheet music too. Thanks in advance, Jim (PS: Sorry about the poor scan, was trying to reduce image as much as I could. The patchwork pattern is from the scanner, not the sheet music itself.)

Hard to tell from the scan so can you tell whether it is the 1927 or 1936 copy?
Thanks. |

Thanks Jim.
I was wondering because the 1927 copy is the one where Norworth changed the opening verse - basically changing the character from Katie Casey to Nelly Kelly. There are about 25 different covers for the music dating all the way back to October 31, 1908 when the song was first published. |

25 Variation covers
As Steve has stated, I've cataloged 25 different variations.
The HOF had stated there was 11. In the last 5 yrs, I've been scouring ebay for copies. What's ironic is the fact that I was missing 2 copies for 5 yrs and found both within 3 wks!! For those not familiar - the difference in the sheet music variations is the photo of the singer on the front. Plus 2 singers have variations of themselves - e.g. Trixie Friganza - one portrait, one standing. The 24th was Jack Norworth himself - I did see one a few yrs ago and was signed - it went for more money than I anticipated! Also, the 1927 version - which I picked up a few yrs ago does have the change in verse characters - Katie Casey/Nelly Kelly - I have never read why he changed them? This has been one of the more enjoyable areas of my collecting. mike |

Welcome to Net54 Mike. Knowing you were not signed up yet I took the liberty of passing your information on to the poster.
You are the man when it comes to Sheet Music!! (Not so bad over here if you just filter out the BS) |

Here are a few that I have....
"1885, National Music Company" "Dream Of Heaven"(1899) with Philip Sousa's baseball team on the back. Funny thing is, I can only find the "Three Strikes Two-Step" as being published in 1902.??? Copyright 1910 |

To be honest, I'm a Take me out to the ball game collector and only pick up other sheet music that looks interesting. I just missed out on a rare piece of sheet music from the 1860s. I got into sheet music collecting because of Take me out... and it's become a real joy - I have a feeling that there aren't many who have 25 different variations to the piece which IMO is the 'cornerstone' to baseball and it's music. |

Very nice pieces Shawn.
I have the Bauer "Dream" waltz with Sousa on the back. Here's the front for those interested: Have never seen the Baseball Waltz copy. Here's a copy of the Waltz from 1902 - I've seen 'repros' of it on ebay but have not looked for the original. I've seen the copyright of 1902 also - perhaps the ad on the back was just kind of early? Thanx for sharing! edit: forgot to add a scan of the 1927 copy of Take me out...with the lyric change: Last edited by stone193; 07-28-2009 at 04:44 PM. |

Nice pieces guys
My two and only pieces of sheet music After last night's horrible performance by the bullpen, I'm afraid I'll have to add a copy of "The Fat Lady Sings..." to my collection Last edited by HiNeighbor; 07-29-2009 at 06:24 AM. |

Here is my White Sox March of 1907 that Bruce described:
Here's a strange one with Mike Donlin: I used to have this one but I think it now resides in Jerry S's collection: |

Team oriented sheet music
Very nice guys.
I like sheet music with teams on it - tho sometimes the competition heats up for that reason. Thanx for sharing - this has been very entertaining. mike |
