Default Semi O/T - Interesting Tris Speaker Quote on Ruth

Posted By: Jon Canfield

I found this quote today and thought it was interesting...

"Taking the best left-handed pitcher in baseball and converting him into a right fielder is one of the dumbest things I ever heard."

- Tris Speaker, baseball hall of famer, talking about Babe Ruth, 1919.

That is very interesting, but I imagine a lot of people felt that way at the time.

I bet Speaker also wouldn't have liked the new board.

thankfully, prescience has never been a criterion for selection to the hall of fame. speaker sure was lacking in that department!

I'd say Speaker's opinion was reasonable. Exclude the name Babe Ruth, and such a switch sounds dumb today.

"I would be the laughingstock of the league if I took the best left-handed pitcher in the league and put him in the outfield." Red Sox manager Ed Barrow on Babe Ruth
