If you think about where he had to place his hand to sign in that spot (with the plastic bubble underneath), it's no wonder that the signature shows some differences from a typical 'flat' item signature.

It's commendable that he fared as well as he did, not to mention his keeping from denting that fragile plastic with his signing hand.

Thankfully, he didn't sign the plastic itself, which is a loathsome sight whenever encountered. It's akin to signing a top loader to me.

The only other place he could have signed it nicely was along the top, above the right hand side of the plastic, but that infuriating price tag was in the way. Then again, it would have been wise to reserve half that real estate for Joe D.

While still not an expert, I feel that I have began to get a feel for Mantle's signature and some of his little nuances with it. I feel this is a good example. One other little nuance about Mantle's signature I have started to pick up on is that on a lot of items he starts very large and flowing on the left and realizes he's beginning to run out of room on the right and has to scrunch it up a bit. I have seen a fair amount of authentic Mantle items that have this feature. While it can be somewhat visually unappealing, it is a common trait.
