Thank you, Gary. Kelly is not a scarce subject, but for some reason this particular pose is hard to find with good contrast.

Fantastic thread.

Here's one of my favorites. Established superstar Hugh Duffy, all 5' 7" of him showing some solid attitude.

Default 1894 Phillies schedule

One of my favorite item being a Phillies fan. Hamilton. Delahanty, Thompson all on the same item the same year they all hit 400 as an outfield. It’s thought this piece was issued to players in the organization.

Connor—What makes you think that the schedule was only issued to players? I would think that the schedule was for fans. No reason to,print a schedule up for players.

Hi Jay- To answer your question- the gentleman that sold me the item made mention of the possibility when it was discovered the font used for philadelphia baseball club” on the back was the exact same font used for official team documents/checks of the period. He shared with me an example matching the two. In which all the info he gave To me I forwarded to SGC for the encapsulation process. It’s not a guarantee by a long shot, but I believe the thought was by the seller —with only a couple of examples known, mine and another in the NYPL- that this production was possibly limited to just the organization. I’m going to go back on my emails with the seller, and see if there was more to it than what I mentioned and remember.

Matt, it looks like we have similar collecting tastes. Here are two of my cabinets that are closest in "feel" to the ones you posted.

The first is most likely Fred Hovey. Identified using The H Book of Harvard Athletics: 1852-1922 as follows: someone wrote "Uncle Fred" on the back; face matches player identified as Hovey in the 1891 and 1892 team photos; uniform matches as well; index says Hovey, Frederick Howard played baseball in '91, '92 and '93 (although he is only pictured in the 1891 and 1892 photos). Not totally definitive, but as good as I can do.

On the other hand, there in no identification of any kind on the front or back of the team cabinet.

[Edited to add: it is Fred Hovey and he seems to have been much better at tennis than baseball https://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...ard-1855396743]

The first professional team in Los Angeles was the 1892 Seraphs. This is an imperial cabinet of that team, a team which became the first SoCal team in the California League that year.

A traditional cabinet would have dimensions of 4.25" x 6.5". The 1873 composite Boston photograph is only 3.25" x 5".

Michael, I have perused these fotos probably too many times and simply can't contain myself any more and am forced to make a few comments.
Team#1. The woman on the far left holding a sledge hammer is no doubt the team enforcer.
Team#2. The hussy lounging against the wall actually has her skirt above the knee (gasp) and clearly giving a-come-hither look to the photographer. If that isn't enough, the masculine-looking lady in the center has her hand resting on the player below. Might be something clearly going on there.
3.This team is obviously sponsored by the local funeral home.
4. I can't think of anything to say here other than the manager has a great 'stash. Apologies in advance.

Since the women seem to be popular, here is one more. This is Lizzie Arlington (real name Elizabeth Stride) who, in 1898, became the first woman to play for a professional men's baseball team.

Comparing the two Dogs Head cabinets it appears that the mounts were not consistent----look at the placement of the & on each. You see something new every day.

Great cards on this thread, gang. Here's a New Orleans Pelican's cab that set me on a Billy Crowell n172 run. I tried to add a Count Campau n172, who is not in this photo, but was on this team, but it was one of those times when I was bidding against a top all bidder. I am not a bidding war guy. I stop, and look for other stuff at better deals.

To keep the run of Columbus team photos going, here's the 1892 team (now known as the Reds)

Where were you when I listed the card on the BST desperately scrounging around for money to fund a purchase?

I'll keep you in mind for the next time!

Default 1904 World Series Champions....Buffalo Bisons

In 1904 Mgr. John McGraw of the N.Y. Giants (N.L. Champs) refused to play Boston (A.L. Champs). McGraw declared his Giants the "World Series Champions".

Since there was no Major League World Series in 1904, the Eastern League (AAA) Buffalo Bisons became the de facto " 1904 World Champions " by defeating
the American Association's St. Paul Saints.
