I had to look up the Ruth postcard to see what it was. When I saw the two for sale on ebay, I recognized the image, but I hadn't known what it was called until yesterday. I've known about the Goudey since about 1974. Take it with a grain of salt.

Watching this 1921 E121 PSA 3 Ruth at Goldin ending tonight really makes the 21 Exhibit seem cheap relatively speaking. Granted the E121 is an iconic pose and lower pop but not sure it warrants more than double what a PSA 3 Exhibit goes for. Prob will be triple if not more when the auction is over.

I have made some bad buys in the past, but I was lucky enough to grab a "Babe Ruth" e121 psa 1 before Elvis left the building. I was hoping to grab the bird and montage one day, those used to be very reasonable, maybe they still are.

I just looked. $15,000 with the juice. "Babe" sold for $50,000.

Thanks for sending those over. Looks like Babe holding Bird is getting more attention. I think people like those early Ruth caramel cards. Plus a psa 4 doesn't come around often.

I agree. The holding bird was only at 7000 when I commented earlier about it. It was a nice card. I'm looking for the lower grade examples. He had a low grade Montage in February that I should have bought. I was right there, I just didn't make the bid. Always a next time.

They're all getting up there. A PC Back Exhibit Ruth portrait in a 5 went for $33K+ earlier this month. That's some serious respect.

I'll go with the #144 because I love those pinstripes against the colorful background and I am not a fan of oversized cards. Also, if a possible future sale is a consideration, the Goudey is on more want lists and thus likely more readily liquid. In the end, as many have said, one cannot go wrong; it all comes down to personal preference and it is always splitting hairs to some degree when choosing among Ruths, Mantles, Cobbs, any blue chip super desirable pieces.

Exhibitman - I missed it but am curious as to the Exhibit Ruth Portrait 5 grade to which you refer. Are you talking the 1926-29 Exhibit Postcard, Pose (holding bat) ? Or other? And which recent auction ? Thanks.

I've been collecting for a very long time and it's always been the 33 Goudey 144. I didn't even know about the 21 until I read this post. There are so many random 20's cards of Ruth, but the Goudey is seared into peoples minds much like the 52 Mantle, 79 Gretzky, 86 Jordan, 89 Griffey, etc. I only bought mine because I love the card and the image, it's iconic and beautiful and my personal grail card. Best of luck on your journey. Trust your gut.

I am usually partial to batting poses of hitters, but this fielding pose of Ruth is just perfect to me. The photographer caught him in a classic stance that wonderfully captures Ruth in his earliest days with the Yankees.
The Conlon batting pose is obviously a classic, but I have always thought that it looked too posed to me and I think that there are better batting images of Ruth that exist. |
