Default Like this MLB Analysis

I liked and agreed with this analysis of the current CBA negotiations and MLB tactics. I thinks it's pish posh the owners are already calling for a mediator. I also must have missed an article or two, because today was the first I had heard about advertising on jersey patches and helmets.

If the players banded together and formed a Players League, they would need organizers with tons of money to finance the whole thing. Building, or leasing, a couple dozen 400 million + ballparks would be quite expensive. Not to mention all of the air travel, accommodations, salaries (50 million per team for 20 teams is a cool billion dollars,) and on and on.

The financiers, having to front well north of a billion dollars, would want to be sure their investment would produce a worthwhile return. Meanwhile, the players would want to maximize their salaries, and so, they would unionize.

And we'd have the same situation that currently exists. The players need the owners and their financial backing, while the owners need the players to be able to generate profitable revenue from their investment.

Current negotiations are nothing more than simply establishing the market price of major league caliber labor. There's a bid price and an ask price. Eventually they will come to agreement, same as happens a million times a day on the floor of the NYSE.
