Who Do You See in this Picture?
This picture ended on eBay last night. The seller claimed that Lefty Grove, Herb Pennock, Max Carey and Harry Hooper were in the picture. Do you agree? Do you recognize anyone else? Do you know what team this is? (I didn't win the auction, but was curious about the picture....)

The seller claims they are on the picture because the names were written on the back...well only those four names were written. I didn't see Lefty, so I assumed the other three HOF players were also missing from the photo!!
Good choice not to bid in my opinion.

If forced to find a resemblance, I would have Grove in the back row second in far left, Pennock kneeling/crouching in front of him, Hooper back row far right and Carey in front of him front row far right. Do you have a link?

I was following the auction as well but couldn't definitely decide if those players were present or not. |

The guy second from left in the back row does somewhat resemble Grove, but I don't think any of those guys are in this photo. The dealer is legit though, someone probably consigned it to him.

The guy in the back row, second from the left certainly resembles Grove. However, I couldn't convince myself that it was him. The uniform also threw me off. According to the book about Lefty Grove by Jim Kaplan, Lefty did occasionally play for other teams over the years besides the Martinsburg Mountaineers, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox. I can't remember, but maybe he played on these other teams before he joined the Athletics. What I wasn't sure about was whether or not he would have been provided a uniform when he played for these teams. They would probably have been weekend tournament teams, or something like that. Not a big commitment. So I thought perhaps somebody had convinced Grove, Carey, Hooper and Pennock to play on one of these teams. It all seemed far fetched, so I didn't bid a huge amount on the picture. It would have been interesting to have the picture and be able to do more research on it. But I don't have a lot of time right now to be doing research on pictures.
