Default Kudos to Hunt Auctions

Not a typical sentiment on this board, and even weirder seeming, coming from another auction company, but their transparency on the gorgeous T206 Plank in their auction is to be commended.

Despite the fact the card is in an SGC 5 holder they disclosed the card's history, including that it had been removed from a scrapbook.

It's this level of transparency to which we should all aspire.

Well done.

I know nothings about T206s, but to me the colors look a little washed out. Was that from the soaking and conservation to remove the glue from the back?

No, that's due to it being a "350" back. Towards the end of the 350 portion of the 150-350 Series print run(s) the 350 backs got that "washed out" look to them. I think it looks cool, but most collectors prefer the bolder fronts of "150" backs.

Thanks Scott. I just looked at the auction. Some really great stuff. HOWEVER:

1. They have numerous cards where they dont show a back scan -- whats up with that? For example, a T206 Demmitt Polar Bear and they dont show a scan of the back, which is the only reason anyone cares about a T206 Demmitt!

2. I dont understand the Live auction (I did read the rules). If each lot ends with a live auction, then why take/make bids between now and December 10th? Does the live auction start where the highest internet bid is? Do you need to bid during the internet portion to bid in the live portion?

LOL, I didn't say they addressed all the issues this board always has with them. I said they got this one thing right. While I agree with most of the complaints board members voice (lack of images, unwieldiness of their web site and of their live auction format etc., this was an unusual move on their part compared to most other auction companies. I thought it warranted a positive mention.

when the bar has been set so low for years it’s easy to make a good impression on some people.

Not the best website, but do you really prefer the sophisticated ones selling a huge percentage of card doctor inventory?

hunt website has nothing to do with my opinion of them. peter you have a tendency to use broad strokes with your implications of auction houses. “sophisticated ones.” what does that mean? instead of leaving people to guess which auction houses you refer to how about being specific instead of throwing them all under the bus with your vagueness. there certainly are major auction houses who routinely sell doctored cards. just as there are ones that don’t. you seem to prefer implicating all of them.

I guess that's a dig at me.

Their bar has been "set low" according to you, but I would say that most complaints (mine included) or more of convenience. Website is clunky, if I want more images I have to ask for them etc... But I've never had any ethical qualms with Hunt.

This particular instance was so far out of the norm in a positive direction that I thought it was worth mentioning. If we reward the companies that do business this way, with full disclosure, maybe the other ones will slowly go away?

Is it customary for auction house representatives to comment so much on other auction house companies?
I’m kind of new around here so I’m asking out of curiosity.

I agree. Some do, some probably do not. some do not. Sorry if I was not clear.

When commenting on another company I usually try and restrict it to the positive, like the idea behind starting this thread.

When engaging in an actual dialogue with a company I strive to be fair.

I was a board member before I was an auctioneer and if I'm willing to stand behind what I say I don't see why I should refrain from sharing my opinions. I certainly wouldn't take it amiss if another auction company complimented me! And if I start a dialogue and another auction company takes issue I'd have to be pretty hypocritical to resent it as long as they were being fair.

EDIT: Oh and I'm the owner not just a representative. I would have a big problem if someone who worked for me was posting about other companies and implying that their opinions were my company's.

It’s a very impressive auction with some amazing items. That Exhibits Ruth photo. Oy vey.

I guess I should have something snarky to say to establish my cred on the board but I failed miserably.

I hope everyone who shits on them completely ignores the auction as they assure us they will.

I sent a question to Hunt Auctions on one of their items in the last auction and never got a response so did not bid on the item.

I don't know, Scott. My first impression is that it was hand cut. Perhaps it's my 63 year old eyes, but I see distinct bat ears on all corners.

I see what you mean, moreso on the top border which has a sightly concave look. But the angle of the cuts top and bottom is the same which would be weird on a hand cut card. Not a real issue for me personally as it's just a bit outside my price range lol.
