1953 Mantle Autograph?
As mentioned previously we're going through my late FILs collection. This card was in the safe with his "good cards" but he'd never mentioned having a Mantle autograph. I assumed some kid had signed it when we pulled it out but looking at other authenticated autos I'm beginning to wonder. What do you think?

Card looks to be counterfeit (not an authorized reprint). Request from Leon that he move the thread to the autograph section. You will get your answer there. There are quite a few Mantle auto experts.

Nice, legit auto on a '53 reprint.

I'm kind of conflicted. It seems odd to me that someone would have a counterfeit card signed. Any thoughts on how that happens? Is it common? I assume that if we want to sell it, it will need to be sent off for authentication. JSA since we're not looking for anything on the fake card?

That was signed in the 80s or early 90s. I don't think that was really a malicious counterfeit back at that time, just a (probably unlicensed) reprint. I mean, people had those K-Mart cards signed by Mick back then.

I had something like this at one time. I didn’t care what the card was , just that the autograph was real. The story I got from the dealer I got it from is a bunch of them were sold through Walmart years ago. The one I had could have been a 91 Archives card as well. I sure wish I had it back.

So the signature is a copy? Honestly, I think if my father-in-law thought he had a legit Mantle autograph he would have told us. I asked his wife and daughter and he had never mentioned it. He never said anything to me about it either. If he just brought a copy off ebay or Etsy that wouldn't surprise me. The only mystery at that point would be why he put it in his safe.

Yep. Just found the exact card on Mercari for $25. Sold as a facsimile signature. Same slight smear of the dot on the i.
Sorry for the journey but appreciate all the insight and help. |
