Default How did this get a PSA 7?

Posted By: jay behrens

The "A" has been redrawn and it still pulled a 7. How is that possible?

The seller claims that the redrawn "A" is how the card was printed, so this should not be a factor in the grade. I assume the information the seller provided is accurate. I have never seen an Old Judge with this type of lettering change, but then again, I am not an Old Judge expert. Old Judge pros should chime in now.

I have to admit after enlarging the image that it certainly seems like that "A" was added sometime after production--it looks like it was penned in with black ink. Curious.

If I sent in that card it would get a 6...

Don't know about the "A"; doesn't seem right to me...perhaps PSA screwed the pooch again?

To me - not a 7. Even if the mark weren't on the A, still not a 7.

And, I definitley feel the A is a mark that was made post-production.

I don't mean to infer that the seller is misleading people, I just don't feel the mark was made in production.

And, as liberal as PSA is about assigning qualifiers, I am very surprised this is not a 7 (MK) (I think it should be a 5(MK), personally).

Just my opinions.

I have seen a few Old Judges that have had redrawn letters like this. I saw some at Tik's table a few months ago, and took the cards out just to make sure they were legit, and they were absolutely done by the Goodwin Co. I can't remember for the life of me the names of the players. I have seen it on the Hutchinson 1890 card though, only name I can remember.

It looks like the corners are sharp and the centering is ok. This seller picked up a lot of these and them all in for grading. While it looks like a border line grade it could pass for a 6 or 7. Maybe they just gave it to him on the sheer volume of business he's done with them.

Unless you have the card in hand I doubt if you'll know for sure. The seller has nothing to gain by making up a story on the appearance of the card. If you are really interested in picking up the card and verifying if PSA erred in "Judge"ment then you can still bid on it for the next 6 days. In this case I would be willing to guess that the seller is being honest.

Note that I like picking up PSA screw ups. I think the coolest one so far is a T201 that is folded and encapsulated in one of the modern day card holders. The biggest error I have is an N172 of Sunday with the ad bottom cut off.

OK, time to start a new thread -

The best errors by the grading companies (only PSA, SGC, SCD, BVG considered). Jury is still out on GAI (at least for me). I'm pretty sure we can leave out AAA, PRO, ASA and a few others.
