Sean,

Are you really referring to the two Gehrigs in the '33 Goudey set? If so, then '52 Topps Mantle by a long shot.

However, it's much closer if you are referring to the '34 Goudey Gehrig portrait.

Since I know an old-time collector who bought four boxes of 1952 Topps High Numbers as a child and opened them and who says the Mantles are not double printed but triple printed, I will take the 1933 Goudey Gehrig. They are older, had less cards printed to begin with and had to make it through the paper drives of World War II to survive. The worst thing the Mantles would have had to face were the bicycle spokes and I doubt very many kids put Mantle in them.

Every Mantle I got went in my spokes when I was a kid. Of course, that was the mid 50's and any Yankee card went in my spokes, as I was a big Cardinals fan. Mays was much bigger back then in my neighborhood.

I don't know, these are tough choices -- would you rather have a Gibson Les Paul or a Fender Stratocaster?

Do you want Ginger or Mary Ann during your stay on Gilligan's Island?

I guess the only acceptable solution is to have both, as each has something important to offer.

I have both the #92 and the #160 Gehrig cards from the 1933 Goudey set, despite the fact that they have identical images:

I recently owned a 1952 Topps Mantle that apparently originated from The Find of unopened 1952 Topps in the mid-1980's. But once I got the card, it didn't seem real to me -- maybe the fact that it sat in a warehouse for 30 years and therefore escaped all the normal handling that most baseball cards are subjected to somehow made it seem less desirable. Anyhow, I let the card sit in my safety deposit box for a while, and then sold it the first time I got a good offer.

ERIC

Great looking cards of Mantle and Gehrig.....the #92 and #160 cards of Gehrig are identical poses; however, every #160 card
I have had (or seen) looks "faded" with respect to the Blue background and Red strip at the bottom.

Someone posted earler that the 52T Mantle was a "triple print"......Not so, it was a Double Print (along with Jackie Robinson
and Bobby Thomson) on the 100-card, High # sheet. Your's is the Type II Mantle....mine is the Type I.....

Incidently, it's a tough decision for me, between Tina Louise and Dawn Wells. When I watched Gilligan's Island I preferred Tina....
But, when I met Dawn (signing at the Philly Show some years ago), I had a change of heart.

Thats right....

if I was stuck on Gilligan's Island -
I'd like to have both Ginger and Mary Ann.

So - I guess it is the same answer for the cards.
Both.

But if I could choose just one....
I might have to go with Mary Ann.

What annoys me is when people call the 1952 Topps Mantle his "rookie" card. That card never was and never will be a "rookie" card.

That Mantle is a borderline six figure card today.

Great cards!

Thanks for the compliments on the cards, guys. It's funny that the #160 Gehrig is more expensive than the #92, given that the latter usually has a sharper image and/or better color, as Ted said. I suppose it is because the #160 is more difficult to find, so '33 Goudey set collectors are willing to pay a premium for it.

It is remarkable how expensive all of Mickey Mantle's cards are, compared with those of other players of his era, but in the world of post war baseball memorabilia, Mantle leads the pack, and I suppose he always will.

By the way I play a Stratocaster, and lean towards Mary Ann (wholesomeness over glamour I guess).

I forgot to mention how in awe I am of your cards, Eric.

I can't afford the real gems, but if you ever decide to part with the Mary Ann, could you drop me a line?

Eric, you are a person of diverse tastes. I would think a Strat slinger would have Ginger on one arm and the Mantle on the other, while Maryann goes for the banjo picker and the Gehrig.

Though both are/were stunning, I'd have to choose Maryann. When you got tired of her, at least seems like she could whip up a decent meal. Ginger wouldn't know a strainer from a collander.

I pick the Mantle. I love the Gehrig, but not the 1933 one, the 1934.

The good one of the two. You know, the one everyone wants?

Gallagher was a person of excess. He'd have had the Mantle and Gehrig and Ginger and Mary Ann all at the same time. Me, I'd settle for any of them.
